The Kennedy family of the USA has been a pivotal part of the country's politics. They have all been celebrities in their own ways. But with the limelight, tragedies have also followed the Kennedys. From John F. Kennedy's assassination to John Jr.'s plane crash, trials and tribulations have followed one of the most influential families in the world. Amid this, JFK's granddaughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, has opened up about her leukemia diagnosis.
Tatiana Schlossberg is the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg. Professionally, she is a journalist and an author who has written for many publications. However, Tatiana's recent essay for The New Yorker has been one of the most jarring and sorrowful ones, which has sent shockwaves through the people. With a very detailed essay, the 35-year-old mother of two revealed that she has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Tatiana also opened up about the seriousness of the situation and shared that she has been told she has a year to live.

Tatiana shared that after a few hours of giving birth to her second child, doctors noticed an imbalance in her white blood cells. The doctors told her that it could be either related to pregnancy or leukemia. Against all hope, Tatiana was diagnosed with terminal cancer with a rare mutation called Inversion 3. The young mother shared that due to the rarity of the disease, she could not be cured with the usual treatments. Tatiana said in the essay:
"I did not — could not — believe that they were talking about me. I had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn’t sick. I didn’t feel sick. I was actually one of the healthiest people I knew. I had a son whom I loved more than anything and a newborn I needed to take care of."
With great sorrow, Tatiana expressed that she has come to terms with her diagnosis. Talking about her children, she wrote that her 3-year-old son, Edwin, will have faint memories of her as he grows up. But her daughter, who is just 18 months old, will not remember her. Tatiana also said that since starting her treatment soon after giving birth for the second time, she has never actually gotten the chance to really take care of her baby daughter.

Tatiana Schlossberg revealed that many of the doctors she consulted asked her if she was around the carnage left in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. The reason is that terminal disease has been found to be very common among the first responders of 9/11. The debris, toxic fumes, and the overall trauma of the experience have manifested as serious diseases among those who were in Ground Zero during the attacks. However, Tatiana shared that she did not visit the site until she was much older, since she was only a sixth grader when 9/11 happened.
We pray for Tatiana Schlossberg's health and wish her family strength during these tough times.
