Taylor Swift Once Revealed That Media's 'Boy Crazy' And 'Serial Dater' Tag Led To Hit, 'Blank Space'

In today’s time, there ain’t anyone who does not know about the American chartbuster singer, Taylor Swift. It’s almost going to be two decades since she stepped into the music industry. She has undeniably given us some amazing soulful music to date. Being the biggest winner bagging nine awards at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor once again proved her mettle to the world. But the 33-year-old singer has often been criticised by the media because of her tumultuous dating life.

Taylor Swift has been time and again linked with some of A-list celebrities from Hollywood. Since she has been in the limelight, she has dated Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hiddleston, and Joe Alwyn, among others. Her dating life has always been a topic of discussion for the media, and there were times when they even tagged her as ‘boy crazy’ and ‘serial dater’.

Taylor Swift openly talked about the sexist remarks by the media

Being in showbiz does come with its own set of challenges. While some succumb to them, others take it as an opportunity to call out the naysayers. Taylor did the latter. She openly criticised being tagged with sexist remarks by the media and called it a public humiliation in an interview with Glamour UK. She said:

"I think the media has sent me a really unfair message over the past couple of years, which is that I'm not allowed to date for excitement, or fun, or new experiences or learning lessons. I'm only allowed to date if it's for a lasting, multiple-year relationship. Otherwise, I'm a, quote, 'serial dater'. Or, quote, 'boy crazy'. The narrative has been so wrong, every time it was the same. It's 'Taylor spotted talking to this guy, she's chasing him.'"

Taylor further added that even at awards shows, her love life would become a topic of discussion, and people would joke about the same. She said:

"What else is it when you have two boyfriends in one year, and everyone's calling you boy-crazy, making jokes about you? That's public humiliation. And I don't think it's fair."

The media painted a very complex picture of Taylor Swift

In the same interview, the Love Story singer talked about how the media has painted a very ‘complex girl’ picture of hers, who is clingy and needy. She has been portrayed as a man-eating and jet-setting serial dater, who lures men and later writes song about them. She said:

“I had been thinking a lot about how the media has created this complex, fictionalised cartoon version of me, you know, this man-eating, jet-setting serial dater who reels them in, but scares them off because she’s clingy and needy; then she’s all dejected, so she goes into her lair and writes a song as a weapon.”

But what makes Taylor different from all other artists is that she never lets these comments get to her. Instead, she uses them to weave beautiful and meaningful songs. In the same interview, she mentioned:

“I mean, man, that’s pretty intense. And I started thinking about what an interesting character that person is. And, if I was that person, what would my life motto be, my mantra? What would I say? I think I’d own it.”

Taylor Swift made an effort to change her ‘public image’

After being labelled as ‘boy-crazy and ‘dependent on men by the media, Taylor Swift made an effort to change how the public perceived her. She said:

"I wasn't going to give them a reason to say that anymore, and I wasn't going to be seen around any men for years, so that's what I did. And what ended up happening was I became happier than I had ever been before."

Taylor Swift revealed how her song, Blank Space was conceptualised

In an interview with Sirius XM, Taylor Swift talked about her song, Blank Space, one of the songs from her fifth studio album, 1989. This particular song is inspired by the incident where the media called her a ‘serial dater’. She opened up about how Blank Space was conceptualised. She said:

“You know what’s interesting about this song is that I started writing it as joke. I was just kinda sitting around thinking about how the media has had a field day talking about what they think my personal life is like. So, I just kind of thought, ‘Alright, so they’ve drawn up this factitious profile of this girl who is like a serial dater and she’s like over-emotional. She’s like unstable, like completely clingy, needy, like a nightmare.’ So i was thinking about it, and i just thought, ‘How incredibly complex and interesting that character actually is if were a real girl and what kind of song she would write.”
