Bollywood actor, Akshay Kumar's mother, Aruna Bhatia, bid adieu to her loved ones and left for the heavenly abode on September 8, 2021. She was critically ill and was admitted to Hiranandani Hospital's ICU. On September 7, 2021, Akshay had rushed to Mumbai from London, where he was shooting for the film, Mission Cinderella.
Akshay announced the news of his mother's death through his social media handles. Stating his unbearable loss, Akshay wrote, "She was my core. And today I feel an unbearable pain at the very core of my existence. My maa Smt Aruna Bhatia peacefully left this world today morning and got reunited with my dad in the other world. I respect your prayers as I and my family go through this period. Om Shanti."

A few moments back, Akshay Kumar and his wife, Twinkle Khanna arrived for the last rites of his mother, Aruna Bhatia. An emotional Twinkle was seen teary-eyed, while Akshay was seen grief-stricken. Their daughter, Nitara too was seen at the last rites of her grandmother. Bollywood celebs like Rohit Shetty, R Balki, Bhushan Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Ramesh Taurani and Sajid Khan reached for the funeral.
On September 7, 2021, Akshay had given an update about his mother's failing health and had asked his fans to keep her in their prayers. His tweet could be read as "Touched beyond words at your concern for my mom’s health. This is a very tough hour for me and my family. Every single prayer of yours would greatly help."

Akshay had to rush back from the shoot, a source quoted by the Hindustan Times had said that the actor had urged the makers to continue their shoot and film the scenes that do not require his presence. The source had revealed, "Akshay is extremely attached to his mother and could not stay away from her while she’s not well, so he decided to fly back to India in a sudden decision."
