Legendary British actor, Terence Stamp passed away at the age of 87. His family confirmed the news on Sunday, August 17, in a statement published by Reuters. They highlighted that he has left behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to inspire people for years to come. While his family sought privacy to grieve Terence's death, let's take a look at his high-profile relationships that made headlines with his exceptional work.
When Terence was rising to the scene as an actor, he dated a budding supermodel, Jean Shrimpton, in the 1960s. The duo was frequently photographed together, eventually becoming the most-photographed couple of their time. Terence and Jean appeared together at his film' The Collector's premiere and were a central part of the 'Swinging Sixties' scene. According to the Telegraph, they broke up due to a misunderstanding about money. Jean got to know that he was taking a percentage of her earnings for promotional work and left him, which he would rather have given her as a surprise later.
In the late 1960s, he was romantically linked to some of Britain's most celebrated women, like actress, Julie Christie. His relationship with Julie, who worked with him in the 1967 classic Far From the Madding Crowd, became one of the decade's most glamorous pairings. The duo's romance was the inspiration behind the Kinks' song, Waterloo Sunset. However, there is no exact reason why it ended.
The Superman actor was also rumored to have dated French actress, Brigitte Bardot in the late 1960s, according to Business Upturn. They reportedly met on a blind date, but soon parted ways due to their contrasting lifestyles. His vegetarianism and her over-the-top personality reportedly clashed, making the relationship brief. As per The Telegraph, they also had a language barrier, where they could not understand each other.
Terence Stamp once discussed in his memoir why Jean left him and said, "She left me because she saw I was a lunatic. I wasn't ready for a twin-soul relationship." But later, he did find love in a 35-year-younger Elizabeth O'Rourke, a pharmacy student from Australia. Since the massive age difference was hard to ignore for Elizabeth, he spent five years patiently convincing her that love could overcome the gap. They eventually married on New Year's Eve 2002, with Stamp at 64 and Elizabeth at 29.

This was the actor's first marriage, despite decades of fame and romances. However, the marriage lasted only six years. Elizabeth filed for divorce in 2008, citing Stamp's "unreasonable behaviour." Legal documents revealed that it was Stamp who initially expressed the desire to separate, agreeing to cover all associated costs. The couple had no children and had been living apart when the divorce was finalized. Reflecting on the split years later, Stamp told The Daily Mail:
"We had an incredible amount of fun. She went back to Australia, and that's why I don't see her, but if I do go there, I'm sure I will. I was absolutely upset. I'd never been married and I thought I would try it, but I couldn't make a go of it."
We send our heartfelt condolences to Terence Stamp's family in this difficult time.
