'The Abandons' Ending Explained: Murder, Forbidden Romance, Rivalry And The Possibility For Season 2

The Abandons have left the fans with several juicy conflicts. However, none is bigger than the war between the two matriarchs: 'Fiona Nolan' and 'Constance Van Ness'. While the former owns the farming land of Jasper Hollow, 'Constance' is the exceptionally powerful woman who runs the frontier town, Angel's Ridge. And the two women cannot get along!

What happened between the 'Nolan' and the 'Van Ness' family?

'Fiona Nolan' and 'Constance Van Ness' have always had an uneasy relationship. However, things worsen between them when 'Constance's' son, 'Willem' r*pes 'Fiona's' daughter, 'Dahlia', and is murdered by the 'Nonals' in the aftermath. While they hide his body deep underground, much of the season follows 'Fiona's' efforts to keep the secret hidden. Nonetheless, like most truths, 'Constance' eventually discovers what happened.

For a moment before this wrecking discorvery, peace seemed attainable between the two families, with 'Constance' even offering to buy a piece of 'Fiona's' land. When she takes it to her family as well as 'Miles Alderton' and his daughter, most agree to sell the land, but 'Fiona' herself refuses to sell it to 'Constance'. All hell breaks loose in the season finale, This Was Meant to be My Peace. Let's explore where The Abandons end.

Are 'Trisha' and 'Elias' still together?

'Constance's' scheming turns to be her own undoing as her own daughter, 'Trisha' turns against her after learning that her friend, 'Jenny' was killed once she discovered that 'Constance' was involved with a criminal gang, 'Red Masks'. As a punishment, she abandons her mother. However, she is forcibly drugged and taken back to the 'Van Ness' home. Another hell breaks loose for 'Trisha' when 'Constance' informs her that her brother, 'Willem', was buried by the 'Nolans', including 'Elias', her boyfriend.

A furious 'Trisha' goes to find 'Elias', stirring even more trouble in their already forbidden budding romance. While she is in disbelief that the man she loves would do such a thing, 'Elias' doubles down and calls 'Willem' a monster and says, "I love you, but I'd do it again". Devastated, 'Trisha' walks away with a sense of finality. However, their love is undeniable, and the real reason that 'Willem' was killed is a shock to 'Trisha'. Nonetheless, perhaps with enough time to process who 'Willem' was and why he was killed, she'll be able to forgive 'Elias', and they can start anew.

A rivalry that turns into a war

After 'Constance' finally discovers what 'Nolans' did to her son, she kidnaps 'Dahlia' with the help of 'Red Masks', turning the bubbling rivalry into a full-blown war. 'Constance' slashes 'Dahlia's' cheek open with a knife; however, the latter refuses to cry or whimper. Instead, as 'Constance' walks away, she taunts, calling out her fake barvado and saying, "You are so scared." And she's right: 'Constance' can only look at her in silence before walking away.

The same night, 'Fiona' arrives at the 'Van Ness' estate alone and surrenders her weapons to the 'Red Masks', making her way to 'Constance's' home. The loving mother, willing to do anything for her kids, strikes a deal to free her child. However, it soon turns ugly with 'Constance' saying, "Nothing much remains of the murderous c*nt." While 'Constance's' men pin down 'Fiona', 'Dahlia' is brought out, and 'Fiona' sees how much pain her daughter is in.

Nonetheless, 'Constance' takes it further, driving a knife into 'Dahlia's' leg and twisting it, telling them their anguish is nothing like what she's experienced losing her son. Furious, 'Fiona' spits at 'Constance', calling her a "f**king c*nt." While it initially appears that 'Fiona' came alone, it was a scheme to take 'Constance's' empire down, 'Miles' (who 'Constance's' son tried to blackmail with his criminal past to turn against 'Fiona') and 'Fiona's' children band together to take down the 'Van Nesses', using their mother's presence as a distraction to infiltrate.

'Miles' uses his considerable shooting skills to kill the two men holding back 'Fiona', a shock that allows 'Dahlia' to break free and stab one of the 'Red Mask' men in the neck. 'Elias', on horseback, brings a wagon full of burning barrels, driving it directly into the 'Van Ness' home, setting it aflame. In a matter of moments, 'Constance's' empire crumbles, and the army she had built perishes. Some of her own children have turned against her, and her exquisite home is in shambles.

Who survived the war?

'Constance' retreats into the house, and 'Fiona' follows, determined to end their feud once and for all by killing her. They fight in 'Constance's' bedroom, exchanging blows and chokeholds as the smoke and flames overwhelm them, knocking them both out as the fire builds around them. Those who survive the ambush watch the house burn, wondering if anyone will survive the long-brewing battle of the matriarchs. Someone, as it turns out, does emerge victorious in their fight. However, whether 'Constance' or 'Fiona' survives is left as a cliffhanger.

Will there be The Abandons Season 2?

The cliffhanger has left the viewers on the edge of their seats. However, now they are even more intrigued to know whether there will be a Season 2 of the much-loved Old West series. Unfortunately, neither Netflix nor any cast or production members have yet commented on Season 2, as the show was released on December 4, 2025. Nonetheless, given the cliffhanger, it's possible the makers will be back for another season, or maybe it was designed to let the audience interpret the ending themselves.
