JioHotstar's latest release, The Good Wife, starring Priyamani in the lead role has become the new talk of the town. It is a bold and layered official adaptation of a hit US Legal drama of the same name but not a carbon copy. Combining courtroom drama with the intricacies of personal relationships, the Indian version not just retells a story of the West but adds a cultural lens to it. The Good Wife, released on July 4, 2025 showcases what it means to be a 'Good Wife' in modern-day India and questions the concepts of loyalty, marriage and self-worth.
The Good Wife begins on a chaotic note where 'Tarunika', a practising lawyer turned homemaker, comes into the spotlight after her husband, 'Gunnaselan' (Gunna), an associate advocate general, is caught up in a s*x scandal. At the same time, he is accused of corruption and collaboration with a drug lord named 'Meth Maharaja'. Soon, different parts of 'Gunna's life begin to come into the forefront. In the middle of everything, 'Tarunika' decides to give herself another chance rather than become a victim of a cheating husband. She joins a prestigious law firm led by her former lover, 'Hari Deepak'. The series focuses on 'Tarunika's journey as she raises her two kids, deals with a crumbling marriage and overcomes professional barriers to rediscover her identity.
As The Good Wife nears its finale,' Tarunika' and 'Gunna's bond begins to heal, especially after the latter is cleared of some of his most serious charges in the court. Ironically, 'Hari Deepak', who once loved his wife, helps to prove that 'Gunna' is not involved in corruption. However, it is confirmed that he paid a s*x worker, hinting towards an extramarital affair. But, just when 'Tarunika' thinks of giving her marriage another chance, things take a turn.
'Hari Deepak', who still loves 'Tarunika' shares a video with her which raises new doubts about 'Gunna' in her mind. In that video clip, 'Thillai,' a shady figure linked to 'Gunna's case, is seen with a woman who was earlier spotted with 'Sneha Marleen'. 'Sneha' is 'Tarunika's former colleague and a key witness in 'Gunna's case. It makes 'Tarunika' think why she testified in his favor, when 'Gunna' had fired her in the past. All this and her weird behaviour with a few uncomfortable meetings with 'Gunna' makes her wonder if she ever had an affair with him.
Throughout the show, several hints suggest that 'Gunna' might not be completely innocent, especially when it comes to his personal life. The subtle glances, mismatched timeliness and new revelations simply leave the viewers guessing. All this while 'Tarunika' showcases that she is strong and unaffected by the developments, but she is visibly shaken inside. She stands with her husband in public, fulfilling the modern role of a 'good wife', but she is filled with doubts on the inside. So, although 'Gunna' is proven innocent, the emotional hits taken by 'Tarunika' and the doubts arising in her mind set the stage for an explosive season 2.
