Is 'The Pitt' Realistic Medical Drama Ever? Here's What We Know About The American Healthcare Show

The Pitt is already making noise, and so far, four episodes from the series have been released. Now, as the fifth episode premiered on HBO Max, fans are wondering whether it is the most realistic drama about American healthcare, and we have an answer. For the unversed, the return of the critically acclaimed medical drama streaming on HBO Max offers a look at doctors and how they practise medicine in modern times. 

Why is The Pitt gaining popularity with a wide audience?

With several OTT platforms and series around the world, viewers are still hooked to TV, thanks to The Pitt. It is an old-school medical drama that captures the pain of the modern healthcare system. The show is set in a Pittsburgh hospital. It is a bona fide hit for HBO Max, and fans, critics, and healthcare workers are hooked on it as well. The doctors are even praising its accuracy in depicting the work of healthcare professionals and the difficulties they face daily. 

Is The Pitt, the most realistic medical drama?

Well, the show is being appreciated and loved by medical professionals. They are liking the accuracy with which it is made. A dean of Northeastern University's School of Nursing, Amanda Choflet, shared that these medical shows always exaggerate things, and everybody in the hospital ends up dead. However, when it comes to The Pitt, she kept waiting for them to make a mistake. She had shared:

"Usually with these medical shows, it’s distractingly inept and everybody would be dead in the hospita [With ‘The Pitt’] I just keep waiting for them to make a mistake, and they’re not."

For the unversed, the creative team behind the show consulted with real doctors and nurses for every scene on the production level to make it look real. They even planned them in scenes with actors to accentuate the authenticity of the show. Amanda points out that the show has its drawbacks and cannot capture the highest level of detail in the emergency room setting. However, it was able to portray the most important element, which is the situation of life and death, by adding authenticity and realism. Amanda was quoted as saying:

"That episode where the attending physician has to go to the bathroom for 45 minutes and just can’t, it was funny when I was talking with my friends because that’s such a subtle thing. You are in a life-or-death situation, you are physically not at your best and you just can’t attend to your own needs because you’re in that situation."

As per an assistant clinical professor at Northeastern with 26 years of experience as nurse, Leah Prasse shared that the show manages to record the exact kind of emotions, people, including both patients and doctors, who are part of any hospital situation. Prasee further added that the certain patients shown in the series, are actually real and many have met them. Leah was quoted as saying:

"The charge nurse is just like every ER charge nurse I’ve ever met. There are certain patients that we’ve all experienced. … A patient running unclothed down the hall, that kind of stuff. If you’ve worked in a hospital in any capacity for any amount of time, those people are exactly the kind of people you interact with."

Leah further stated that the perfect demonstration is by the nurses. The Pitt has done its homework, as it aptly shows the state of nurses and how they are treated in the hospital. As per Angela Hosking, many medical shows depict nurses as glorified assistants, but they simply have to take orders, and they do not ask questions. The show treats them as part of the team. She said:

"I love how they really showcase the level of expertise of [Dana] and how she runs the show She has a level of awareness of everything that’s happening with each of the physicians and a level of hyper vigilance and oversight that is so key to running an entire unit. It can be undervalued and overlooked."

Each episode of The Pitt season 2 is like one hour in a day shift at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre. The show still has the attending physician, Dr. Robby', played by Wayle, who is working the day shift. With him, he has a team of familiar faces from season 1, including doctors, 'Samaira Mohan' played by Supriya Ganesh, 'Cassie McKay' (Fiona Dourif), 'Mel King', 'Trinity Santos' and 'Dennis Huckleberry" Whitaker'. The team is working together to face the crisis
