Is The Rip based on a real-life event?

For the unversed, the story of The Rip is loosely inspired by a friend of the film's writer and director, Carnahan. While the real-life event sparks the inspiration in the movie, the leads Matt Damon and Ben Affleck don't play any real-life characters. Speaking to Tudum, Carnahan revealed that the movie was inspired by a personal experience that a friend went through, wherein the Miami police got to know about USD 20 million (exact amount in real life) in a deserted safehouse. Another inspiration for the movie was Carnahan's bad breakup. Speaking about the same, Carnahan said:

"It was really fraught with a lot of pain and anger. And in the weirdest way, man, it just reconstituted — I kept thinking of Back to the Future II, like give me trash and I'll create fusion. I found this to be very therapeutic, and that script just kind of flew out of me."
