'The Truth And Tragedy Of Moriah Wilson': Where Is Colin Strickland Now? His Life After The Tragedy

Netflix's latest addition to the true-crime world, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, revisits one of the most disturbing cases in recent sports history. Released on April 3, 2026, the documentary brings renewed attention to the 2022 killing of rising cycling star Moriah 'Mo' Wilson, who was fatally shot in Austin, Texas.

The documentary carefully retraces the late cyclist's life, exploring the events leading up to her death, and the investigation that followed. After a calculated escape and a 43-day international manhunt, the killer was caught, and Colin Strickland, a fellow cyclist who was among the last to see Mo alive, became a central character in the investigation. Nearly four years after the tragedy, Strickland's life looks nothing like he had once imagined.

Who was Moriah Wilson?

Moriah Wilson, aka Mo, was a rising star in professional cycling, known for her success in off-road disciplines like gravel and mountain biking. She was a Dartmouth graduate and a former elite skier, quickly building a strong reputation in the sport, including a major win at the Big Sugar Gravel race. Widely respected for both her talent and her character, Wilson was known as a warm, kind presence in the cycling community, and many believed she had an incredibly bright future ahead.

However, all her dreams were tragically cut short in 2022, when the 25-year-old was fatally shot inside a friend's house in what prosecutors later described as a crime borne out of romantic jealousy. Her killer, a yoga instructor connected to a complicated love triangle, was found guilty of Mo's murder. The once bright star in the cycling community was found dead on the night of May 11, 2022, in Austin, Texas, with multiple gunshot wounds from a SIG Sauer P365 handgun.

Colin Strickland was also a professional cyclist from Texas, best known for gravel racing and fixed-gear criteriums, having won races like the 2019 Unbound Gravel and the 2015 Red Hook Crit series. However, more than his professional achievements, he has grabbed nationwide attention for his connection to Mo's 2022 murder. Both he and Mo were elite riders in the communiy and had long been associated with the same competitive circuit.

On May 11, 2022, Mo Wilson was in Austin, Texas, when she met Colin. That evening, the two spent their time swimming and grabbing food before Colun dropped her off at a friend's home on his motorcycle at 8:36 p.m. Just less than an hour later, she was shot and killed in the hands of what would later be discovered as Colin's on-and-off girlfriend, Kaitlin Armstrong.

Kaitlin had been tracking Colin's steps that day through GPS, and shortly after he dropped Moriah off, she barged into Mo's friend's house and confronted her about her invomvement with Colin, and then shot her multiple times around 9:15 p.m., leaving Mo fatally wounded. There were three gunshots, and the cyclist died on the scene. Her friend, who was not present in the apartment at that time, found her dead 30 mins later and immediately called the police.

Why did Kaitlin Armstrong kill Moriah Wilson?

Colin was in a turbulent, on-and-off relationship with Kaitlin, who was still living in his home at the time of the murder. However, the two had already separated and were staying in different rooms under the same roof. Colin had purchased two firearms that he never used, one of which was later identified as the one that was used to kill Moriah Wilson.

Regarding the motive behind the murder, prosecutors claimed Kaitlin was driven by "romantic jealousy" over Strickland's friendship with Wilson, leading to a fatal love triangle. Mo's murder triggered a high-profile, cross-border manhunt that lasted 43 days. Authorities eventually tracked her down, and she was arrested June 29, 2022, in Costa Rica. She was convicted of first-degree murder in January 2024 and was sentenced to 90 years in prison. She is currently incarcerated at a prison in Gatesville, Texas, and will be eligible for parole in 2052.

Where Is Colin Strickland Now?

In the years since the murder, Strickland has largely disappeared from the public eye. After the gruesome case, he stepped away from the sport entirely, losing all interest in the sport that he once loved with all his heart. Reflecting on the tragedy, he said in a 2025 interview:

“Every aspect of it was just horrific and wasteful. I immediately had no interest in cycling. Period. Everything was burning, like my whole world was on fire. There would have been no bike racing under any circumstances. This would be completely toxic to me, and I couldn’t do that.”

Nearly four years later, Colin's life is nowhere near what he had imagined before the tragedy, even though he admits he never truly recovered from the "shell shock" of everything that happened. Today, he lives a much quieter life in Texas, working in automotive restoration, focusing on Spartan trailers and vintage vehicles. He has also taken on personal projects, including restoring a historic home and helping family members settle nearby. He said in the Netflix documentary:

"This is pretty much my life these days. Just time alone in the shop. Part of that’s, just things are just outside my control, so I shrunk my world massively, so that I could feel some kind of control."

Were Moriah and Colin ever in a romantic relationship?

Moriah and Colin were reported to have briefly dated in late 2021 and early 2022, during a period when the latter was separated from Kaitlin Armstrong. At the time of her murder, Wilson and Strickland were not in a relationship and Strickland had been living with his estranged girlfriend, Kaitlin. They briefly dated during a week she spent in Austin, but Wilson was never fully clear about where she stood in his life. During Armstrong’s trial, Strickland testified extensively about his connections to both women, though he was never charged in the crime.

The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson captures not only the horrific crime that shook the cycling community, but also paints a stark picture of the unhealed wounds it left behind.
