Back in the early decades of the 60s Bollywood, there was seldom a moment when too many actors from the film fraternity would be seen attending an event together. While there was an apparent cause of rivalry and competition between them, some also refused to interact socially beyond the scope of the sets. However, there was this one time when two contemporary actors of the same generation, Waheeda Rehman and Meena Kumari, had attended up, close and personal the same wedding.
While scrolling through our IG feed, we stumbled across a vintage picture of two legendary divas, late Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rehman, as they attended the wedding of Minoo Mumtaz and her twin sister. For the unversed, Minoo and her twin were the siblings of the legendary actor, Mehmood. The two sisters married on the same day, and Meena and Waheeda attended their double ceremonies. But, most importantly, what stole the show was the sheer yet simple beauty of both the actresses and the brides, revealing once more the phrase of ‘beauty in simplicity’.

Even after so many decades today, the gorgeous Waheeda Rehman continues to shine bright in Bollywood with her charming and gracious presence. While she may have aged now, it seems there is no stopping of her eternal beauty. The yesteryear actress had recently joined as the guest in the chat show, The Invincibles, hosted by Arbaaz Khan. During many of their candid conversations, Waheeda recalled a memorable anecdote with her frequent co-star back in the days, late Sunil Dutt. She mentioned how on visiting Sunil, who was admitted to a hospital after a hectic political rally, the latter was surprised to find her hair completely white and not dyed. In her words:
“So I went inside and wished him also asked about his health. But as he looked at me he was in a state of shock. So I asked him what happened. To which he said, what have you done? I thought he was asking why I came in, so told him that I took permission and came. He said, I am not talking about that I am speaking about your hair. Why did you colour your hair white? I replied, Sunil I have not coloured it white instead stopped colouring it black they are actually white."
Further, during her conversation in the same chat show, Waheeda also opened up about the initial phase of her career in the film industry. She recalled how the eminent filmmaker, Guru Dutt, had once thought he was making a mistake in casting her in his film, Pyaasa, since he found her skills almost useless and even compared her to a wooden doll. But, as destiny would have it, the film eventually ended up being a milestone achievement in her career, and instead of the previous apprehensions, it won her a lot of accolades and awards.

In yet another anecdote about her life, Waheeda spoke about an interesting moment when a film distributor asked the filmmaker, Guru Dutt, to suggest a name change for her since they felt it would not work in her favour. Nevertheless, the actress voiced her opinion on the same and staunchly refused to do any such thing. Mentioning it years later in an interview, Waheeda recalled:
“Excuse me, it is my own name. My parents have given it to me, why should I change my name? I am ready to work hard, but a few things about which I don't feel comfortable, I will not do it because I won't be able to.”
Coming to her personal life, Waheeda Rehman tied the knot with another eminent actor of the decade, Shashi Rekhi (better known by his stage name, Kamaljeet) in April 1974. Sadly, Shashi passed away in the year 2000 after suffering from a brain haemorrhage. The couple is blessed with two children, Kashvi and Sohail, who grew up to be eminent screenwriters by profession.
