Golf legend Tiger Woods has returned to the headlines following a recent car crash that led to his arrest on DUI and property damage charges. On Friday, March 7, 2026, his Land Rover was found rolled over in a terrible shape in Jupiter Island, Florida. A witness at the scene claimed the golfer was initially unconscious and later regained awareness when the deputies arrived.
As new details emerge about the incident, including claims that Woods had no memory of the crash and refused a urine test for intoxication, his troubled past has resurfaced. Besides his history of car crashes, the star golfer had gotten himself in numerous scandals, including one particularly dramatic cheating scandal that labelled him a "serial cheater."

In 2009, Tiger Woods was at the height of his career and practically untouchable. After back-to-back wins, including 14 majors between 1997 and 2008, he had just won his first event in Australia and became the first athlete to earn USD 1 billion. The then-33-year-old was married to Swedish former model, Elin Nordegren, and had a picture-perfect life with two children, and his reputation as the greatest golfer of all time secured him endorsement deals worth around USD 110 million.

On November 27, 2009, just a day after Thanksgiving, Woods got into a car crash near his house in Isleworth, Florida, at around 2:30 a.m. His car, a Cadillac Escalade, crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree moments after leaving his driveway. What began with an otherwise minor accident soon escalated into a life-altering scandal that exposed details of Woods' personal life and marital issues.

Days after his car crash, tabloids were buzzing with headlines of a "Tiger Woods cheating scandal", with reports of multiple affairs surfacing against the golfer's name. A voice mail also made rounds, where Woods allegedly asked a woman to remove her name from his phone, and this would eventually expose the hockey superstar's double life.

In late 2009, multiple instances of infidelity came to light and dismantled Tiger Woods' public image. The first allegation involved a nightclub hostess named Rachel Uchitel, when a report by The National Enquirer claimed that Uchitel was romantically involved with Woods for months. His then-wife, Elin Nordegren, discovered suspicious phone calls and text messages that he exchanged with Uchitel. Nordegren reportedly confronted Woods about his affair the very night of the accident and chased him out of his house with a golf club, followed by his car crash.

Photos of Woods and Uchitel surfaced in the news, which only intensified the fire. During the Australian Masters, Uchitel reportedly checked into the same hotel as Woods and allegedly told a friend, "It's Tiger Woods! I don't care about his wife! We're in love!" While initial claims were denied, the situation quickly escalated as more details and more names began to surface in the following weeks.
Woods had arranged for a call between Nordegren and Uchitel, where she reportedly denied any romantic connection, but his wife wasn't convinced. That seed of doubt led her down a rabbit hole as Nordegren scrolled through his call records one day. She discovered that Woods had been involved with numerous women simultaneously, and this eventually led to widespread accusations that he was a “serial cheater.”

A key moment in exposing the scandal was a voicemail that Woods sent to one of his mistresses, where he allegedly asked her to remove her name from her phone to avoid getting caught. In the now-infamous voicemail, the hockey star can be heard saying:
"Hey, it's, uh ... it's Tiger. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and, uh, may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off that. And, um ... just have it as a number on the voicemail. OK? You got to do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right, bye."

As per the National Enquirer report, Tiger Woods had been having an affair with Uchitel since June 2009, just four months after the birth of their son, Charlie. The duo reportedly met at a club in New York City, and Uchitel affectionately called him "Bear". In the string of explicit texts that Uchitel shared with her friends, Woods had reportedly claimed that he was going to leave his wife and get a divorce. Soon after, multiple women came forward with similar allegations.
As more women came forward, the scale of the scandal grew significantly, with reports suggesting alleged affairs with at least 14 women, if not more. That "serial cheating" controversy blew up into one of the biggest scandals in sports, significantly affecting Woods' reputation in front of the world. Woods later admitted to being unfaithful, issuing a public apology and stepping away from golf for a period.
In the process, he lost major endorsement deals with brands like Nike, Gatorade, Gillette, and Accenture. He also withdrew from the Chevron World Challenge, marking a dramatic pause in his once-dominant career. By the end of 2009, Woods was admitted to a rehab for s*x addiction and his golf career fell apart. He later reportedly confessed to sleeping with at least 120 women. In 2010, his seven-year marriage to Elin Nordegren ended in a divorce.
Do scandals of this scale ever truly fade? History suggests otherwise. Woods’ troubled past has repeatedly resurfaced with each new controversy, and his latest arrest has returned the focus.
