Sony SAB's iconic show, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah completed 15 years in 2023. However, to this date, it is one of the most loved and watched television sitcoms in India. One of the most prominent characters in the show was 'Dayaben', played by Disha Vakani. But after giving unmissable performances for many years, she bid goodbye to the show in September 2017 for her maternity break and never returned. Since then, TMKOC makers have been searching for a perfect actress who can portray the role but have not found someone suitable. Amidst this, rumours about the show getting off-air also surfaced in the media.
Finally, Asit Kumarr Modi issued a statement to dismiss all such rumours about the show going off-air and also talked about the ongoing hunt for 'Dayaben's' character. As reported by TellyChakkar, Asit clarified that TMKOC is not going off-air, and he would continue entertaining his audiences. He mentioned that even though it takes a lot of time, the character will be back onscreen soon. Asit's statement read as:
“I’m here to entertain my audience and I will never lie to my viewers. Only due to certain circumstances, we are unable to bring Daya’s character back on time. But, that does not mean that the character is not going to enter the show at all! Whether it is Disha Vakani or someone else, the time will tell. But, it’s my promise to the audience that Daya will be back, and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is going nowhere. It is not an easy task to run a comedy show for fifteen years. It is one of a kind, which has not witnessed a single leap.”

In August 2023, in an interview with ETimes, Asit Modi announced that the auditions for the role of 'Dayaben' are underway. Asit also mentioned that the perfect candidate for the role is extremely difficult to find. However, they were searching for the same and needed a brilliant performer. In Asit's words:
“The audience of the show has been patiently waiting to see their favourite Dayaben back on the show. The casting for the character isn’t easy and it will be a challenge for any actress to step into Disha’s shoes. We will need a brilliant performer for the part.”
Since, millions of fans of the show, TMKOC has been impatiently waiting for the return of 'Dayaben' in the show, time and again, several reports have emerged claiming actresses have been finalised for the role. A source close to The Free Press Journal revealed that producer, Asit was all set to make the character 'Dayaben' return to the show. For the same, popular actress, Rakhi Vijan was shortlisted for the character as the producer can't confirm anything about the comeback of Disha Vakani. However, till now, we haven't seen Rakhi playing the role onscreen. The source could be heard saying:
"Rakhi Vijan has been approached for essaying the role of Dayaben. Rakhi is one among the most talented actresses. She has a fine comic timing."

Earlier, according to a report on Koimoi.com, it was stated that the show's producers and Disha Vakani were in close contact. Allegedly, they were planning for her return to the show. However, the ideas didn't work well, so Disha decided to quit the show permanently. Well, the news was quite disheartening for Disha's fans nationwide. A source close to the portal stated:
"After the maternity break, there definitely had been talks regarding the perfect plot to return. Producers had been in touch with Disha, and some on-going negotiations were being worked upon. But unfortunately, things did not materialise, and Disha decided to quit."
