Varun Dhawan has come a long way in Bollywood after his debut film, Student Of The Year. The actor was seen opposite Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, who had also made their debuts in the movie. The actor was launched in a two-hero clubbed movie, and he had his share of insecurities. Now, in a recent interview with Shubhankar Mishra for his YouTube channel, the actor spoke about being upset as Sidharth was in the film.
Varun played the role of 'Rohan' in the film, while Sidharth essayed the role of 'Abhimanyu'. The plot of the movie was about who would be the student of the year in St. Teresa's school. Varun revealed why he did not feel secure in front of Sidharth. In his words:
"He was tall and wide, good looking, and there were two heroes in the film. At that time, I felt that he is amazing and looks handsome, so people will only watch him. Will people even notice me or not? What if my dream only stays a dream?”
Varun was not just insecure of Sidharth's good looks but also the fact of nepotism being widely discussed in the Bollywood movie industry. The actor noted that the negativity around nepotism also started at that time. So, during that time, he hadn’t planned anything before entering the industry; he only knew that he had worked hard and was deserving. Varun added:
"But people were saying something else. The reception has not always been flowery, that’s what people feel. But, I have had to fight that a lot. No matter what happens, I will keep fighting".
Varun shared that he had to fight hard and prove his worth to the audiences via his movies. His performance had to speak as when his films started working, then that perception broke. He had got work also because of his dad, later.
David during his conversation with Arbaaz Khan for his show The Invincible Series revealed that Karan Johar took Varun and Sidharth to Goa for a photoshoot. Varun was upset but David motivated the actor and said:

David also claimed that he was not aware of Varun's interest in films as they had never spoken about it at home. Varun was studying abroad; he came back. All of a sudden, he approached Karan Johar and assisted him for My Name is Khan. The cinematographer, Ravi K Chandran, noticed him mouthing dialogues and told Karan, you must watch this boy. One day, Karan came home and told David that he wanted to launch Varun. David also said that after Student Of The Year released in 2012, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan said that the actor would last long in the industry.
