The actor was born to his parents, Sham Kaushal and Veena Kaushal. While his father worked as an action director in Bollywood, Vicky’s mother, Veena was a homemaker. The doting parents are also blessed with another son named Sunny Kaushal, and just like his big brother, he is also working as an actor in Bollywood.

The Masaan actor, Vicky Kaushal comes from a Punjabi Hindu family with ancestral roots in Hoshiarpur. Once in an old interview, he described himself as an ordinary youngster with a passion for studying, playing cricket, and watching movies, when asked about his childhood days. Well, Vicky’s educational journey started at the Sheth Chunilal Damodardas Barfivala High School in Mumbai. The actor completed his schooling at this famous school, which was located in the Andheri West region of Mumbai.

During his school days, Vicky Kaushal participated in a series of plays and other cultural events. His parents knew he was more interested in acting and dramatics than in studies. The doting father convinced Vicky to pursue an engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in Mumbai.

When Vicky Kaushal decided not to work as an engineer

It was during an industrial visit to an IT firm during his college years that Vicky Kaushal had an insight into the life of an engineer’s job. However, it failed to excite him, and after he came back from the IT visit, he was sure that he wouldn't work as an engineer after completing his degree. Instead, the experience ignited his aspiration to pursue a career in the world of cinema. Thus, after thinking about becoming an actor for some time, he enrolled in Kishore Namit Kapoor's academy to study the art of acting and nurture his raw talent.

During his engineering days at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology, Vicky Kaushal was also actively engaged in theatre. From collaborating with Manav Kaul's Aranya group to Naseeruddin Shah's Motley Productions, he had enthusiastically worked backstage with works like making announcements and filling in as a stand-in. However, over the next two years in the theatre world, Vicky started giving auditions across various domains, but unfortunately, he did not get selected for any show. It was in 2011, when Vicky got the much-awaited break of his life, when ace actor and writer, Manav Kaul chose him to feature in his theatrical production titled Laal Pencil.

Vicky Kaushal’s first salary during his first job as an assistant director

After doing a lot of work in theatre, Vicky Kaushal took the next step in his acting journey and contacted his father, Sham Kaushal’s friend and director, Anurag Kashyap, for some work. The filmmaker appointed Vicky as one of the assistant directors of his film, Gangs of Wasseypur. As per the reports, Vicky was paid a salary of Rs. 10,000 for working as an AD in Anurag’s film. It was in 2015 when Vicky made his acting debut in the film industry with Masaan, and since then, he has continued to take his acting to a notch higher with his every performance.
