Vijay Mallya caught the attention after he dropped two tweets after the tremendous win of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2025. Following the same, he appeared on Raj Shamani's podcast, and has been trending all over. For the unversed, the former Indian businessman left India back in 2016, and he never returned. Reportedly, he currently lives in the UK and continues to live a lavish life. In a recent interview, Vijay revealed whether he would return to India, he also reacted to being called a fugitive.
During the interview, Raj Shamani asked Vijay Mallya whether he would ever return to India. To this, Vijay gave one condition and mentioned that he could come to India only if he had an assurance of a fair trial and dignified existence here, and right now, he doesn't have both. Mallya further added that there are few people who are being targetted by the Indian Government for extradition from the UK back to India, but the UK high court appealed that the Indian detention condition is violative of the European Convention Of Human Rights, and thus, they can't be sent back. In Vijay Mallya's words:
"If I have assurance of a fair trial and a dignified existence in India, you may be right, but I don’t. But, you should also be aware that there are other people who the government of India is targeting for extradition from the UK back to India in whose case, they have got a judgment from the high court of appeal that Indian detention conditions are violative of article 3 of the ECHR and therefore they can’t be sent back."
In the same interview, Raj Shamani asked Vijay Mallya if he thinks it to be fair for people to call him a fugitive as he left India and never returned. Reacting to this, Vijay said that he flew out of India on a pre-scheduled visit, and didn't return for reasons, he thinks are valid, so if anyone wants to tag him as a fugitive, then he has no issue with it. He also mentioned that while people can call him a fugitive, they need to answer where is the chor and where is the chori as well. Vijay Mallya can be quoted as saying:
"I flew out of India on a pre scheduled visit. Fair enough, I did not return for reasons that I consider valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead, but where is the ‘chor’ coming from… where is the ‘chori’?"
For the unversed, Vijay Mallya was a well-known businessman in India in the 2000s. Known as the 'King Of Good Times', Vijay Mallya owned Kingfisher Airlines and used to run United Breweries. During the peak of his career in 2013, he enjoyed a net worth of USD 750 million, which was the highest in India back then. However, his Kingfisher Airlines started facing losses, and with the determination to deal with this, Mallya took loans from Indian banks, totalling Rs. 9,000 crores reportedly. However, the losses continued to happen, and as a result, Kingfisher Airlines was shut down.
Vijay remained unable to pay the debts, leading him to get the tags of fraud and money laundering. Later, in 2016, investigations began, and that was when Vijay moved out from India secretly. Currently, Vijay continues to live in the UK, and he has been fighting his legal battles from there only. There have been multiple times that he was asked to come back to India, but he denied the same.
