One of the most prominent names in the later 70s and early 80s decade of Bollywood, Vinod Mehra, was one such actor who brought about a revolutionary change to the face of the new hero in cinema. Interestingly, the germ of acting had been a part of his life quite early, since he had started to take part in films from the age of 10. After that, he created history on celluloid with some of his iconic films like, Laal Patthar, Anuraag, Amar Prem, Jaani Dushman, and Bemisal, among others. But, ironically, even after scoring such a glorious acting career, he was, on the contrary, equally unfortunate when it came to his personal life.
Vinod not only suffered failed marriages but also endured a tremendous pain when his wedded wife eloped with one another man. Well then, without any further ado, let us dive straight into the tale of his love life!
Vinod Mehra made a smashing adult debut in 1971 when he starred opposite Tanuja in the film, Ek Thi Reeta, an adaptation of the English play titled, The Girl Called Reeta. His unique acting style received critical appreciation, making him a notable entrant among the already-established plethora of actors. In this precise moment, his personal life took a new turn. Vinod’s mother, late Kamla Mehra, had set up her son in an arranged marriage with Meena Broca, and the duo eventually tied the knot in 1974.

While everything seemed to be going smoothly between the newly-wedded couple, ill fate struck. Vinod and Meena reportedly could not consummate their wedding since the former had suffered a massive heart attack within months of marriage. This move rendered them childless and shook the foundation of their relationship, which eventually led to their divorce four years later, in 1978.

During his last failing years of marriage with Meena Broca, Vinod started having an extra-marital affair with the frequent leading lady of his films, Bindiya Goswami. The duo was a popular couple and had worked in many films like, Khud-Daar, Chor Police, and Jaani Dushman, among others. They dated one another secretly for the longest time until popular tabloids got a whiff of the same, courtesy to someone close to them, having revealed it to the media.
Much like everyone else, Vinod Mehra’s in-laws also learnt about such a scandalous extra-marital relationship between him and Bindiya. They were highly raged as Vinod cheated on his wife, Meena and even threatened him to mend his ways. Nevertheless, Vinod quite unabashedly continued with his relationship with Bindiya, and the duo was reportedly left shifting from hotel to hotel to be safe. And as the final nail to the coffin, Vinod married Bindiya in 1980, barely two years after divorcing Meena.

Unfortunately, Bindiya and Vinod’s marriage was short-lived and that too for the most tragic of reasons. It so happened that Vinod’s professional career especially his popularity, had taken a downward slope when the duo got married. This eventually led Bindiya to get close with prominent filmmaker, J.P. Dutta. He had directed her in quite a few films, which made them fall in love. And so, Bindiya did not think twice about leaving Vinod and eloping with J.P. Dutta. While it came as a shocker for Vinod, he made a few attempts to win Bindiya back into his life, which failed tragically. Fast forward to today, she is still married to J.P. Dutta, and the duo has raised their own family.
With back-to-back two failed attempts in marriage, Vinod was left heartbroken and shattered. At this time, he met Rekha, who had given quite a few hits being the ladylove of his films. Interestingly, much like Vinod, Rekha, too, at this time, was nursing her wounds of being rejected in her extra-marital relationship with Amitabh Bachchan. Thus, the duo had bonded like no other, and it was even speculated that they had fallen head-over-heels in love with one another.
Being hailed as one of the most hit jodis of their time, soon enough, it was widely speculated that Rekha and Vinod Mehra had apparently tied the knot in a secret wedding, which was later blatantly denied by Rekha. Moreover, it was also reported that Vinod’s mother was not on terms with his sudden marriage to the actress, and when he brought his then-third wife back home, his mother had bashed Rekha with her pair of slippers. This unforeseen action affected their relationship negatively, and the duo called it quits after that.
Even after bearing all of these broken fragments of ill-fated love, it seemed that destiny was still intended to give Vinod a chance at happiness. It was, therefore at this time that he met the daughter of a Kenyan businessman, Kiran. She seemed perfect for Vinod, and he was happy to settle down with her. Thereafter, the duo married in 1988 and settled in marital bliss.
They were later blessed with their son, Rohan and their daughter, Soniya. After their father's death, Soniya and Rohan were raised by their mother, Kiran in her parental house in Kenya. Growing up, both Rohan and Soniya followed the footsteps of their father, Vinod Mehra and established themselves as actors. For the unversed, while Sonya has been a part of films like Ragini MMS 2, Ek Main Aur Ek Tu, Rohan went on to work on some notable films like Baazar and 420 IPC. Moreover, Rohan was also speculated to be dating actress, Tara Sutaria for some time.
After living a fulfilling and hearty life with his wife, Kiran and their children, Rohan and Soniya, Vinod Mehra passed away at the age of 45 in October 1990. At that time, he was working on his last film, Gurudev as a filmmaker and producer, which starred Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor in the lead roles. He encountered a massive heart attack, and passed away shortly, before he could wrap up his work for the film. It was later completed by Raj Sippy and was posthumously released in his name in 1993.
