After RCB’s historic victory at the Indian Premier League 2025, the celebration soon turned into a devastating tragedy as a stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left over 40 injured. This unfortunate incident has cast a heavy shadow over the franchise's long-awaited moment of glory. Now, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli have reacted to this tragic turn of events.

What was supposed to be a moment of extreme pride and glory at the historic celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first-ever win of the IPL title turned into a dark and devastating day for the city. After RCB clinched their maiden IPL trophy in 18 years, jubilant fans all over Bengaluru took to the streets in large numbers to celebrate the occasion. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) organised a special felicitation ceremony at the  M Chinnaswamy Stadium, where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was scheduled to honour the team.

However, the situation outside spiralled out of control and turned into utter chaos as massive crowds gathered, many without tickets, just to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes. The surge of the crowd at the gates was so overwhelming that it turned into a deadly stampede. As per reports, 11 individuals lost their lives at the stampede, and 40 were left injured.

The tragic stampede has left the entire cricket fraternity devastated, given the unexpected loss of 11 loyal fans who had been rooting for RCB’s victory for 18 years, just to end up dead when the moment of celebration finally arrived. Among those left devastated by the incident were cricketer, Virat Kohli, and his wife, actress Anushka Sharma. Both Virat and Anushka took to Instagram to express their sorrow at this unfortunate incident. Kohli, visibly shaken, shared an official statement released by RCB and wrote:

“At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted.”

Anushka, who had earlier shared cheerful moments from the victory parade, posted a string of video clips, showing their escort bus moving through the crowd of fans, with Kohli sitting in the front with the trophy in his hand. In one of the stories, Anushka wrote, “Namma Bengaluru current scenes,” and in the second one, she wrote, “These happy faces have waited for this very lovingly and patiently.” Anushka also shared the official RCB statement on her feed.

RCB Releases official statement after the stampede

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru issued a formal note on their official Instagram handle, expressing deep anguish over the tragic turn of events. The official statement from RCB read:

“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us… RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.”

Compensation announced for the victims

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah confirmed the loss of 11 lives in a press conference, assuring that the government would bear all medical expenses of the injured. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakh to each of the bereaved families. RCB and KSCA also jointly pledged Rs. 25 lakh in compensation. Meanwhile, netizens blamed the local administration for failing to control the crowd and questioned why better crowd management protocols weren't in place.
