There are very few film series that keep the audience hooked from the first film to the very last. One such series that started in 2019, and instantly managed to capture the viewers' attention is Knives Out by Rian Johnson. Recently, the makers of the film, released the third instalment of this series, which is Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. While the film is generating a lot of buzz, read on to know if the film is worth watching or not.
The film opens in a small church in New York. The priest of the church, 'Monsignor Jefferson Wicks', gives a strong sermon but then walks into a closet. Soon after going inside, he is found dead in a very weird manner. To solve the case, detective 'Benoit Blanc' is called. Later, a young priest, 'Jud Duplenticy', who is confused, helps 'Benoit' uncover lies and anger.
One of the strongest aspects of the film, Wake Up Dead Man is the way the story is told. It feels like the mystery story is told in a human and relatable manner. Unlike Glass Onion, which felt a little artificial, this film looks real, where characters bring their own flaws, grief and emotions. The film is clever and detailed, like classic detective stories, but it also keeps the emotional motives strong.
Another thing that works in the film is the powerful performance given by actors like Daniel Craig and Josh O’Connor. The actors bring their own thoughts, warmth, smartness, charm, intensity and emotion to the film. The supporting cast also added their own layer, which elevated the overall experience.
Apart from the good things in this film, the film isn’t flawless. There are times when the filmmaker has tried to do so many things at once, like mixing comedy, religion, mystery and even politics, which eventually feels very heavy and goes flat. Another thing that can be a major drawback is the viewers, who are expecting a fun and light story like the previous film, Knives Out, might find this film dark and very serious. Another flaw of the film is that some side stories were given more than needed screen time. Some stories, which are not that important, feel longer than is required.
