NASCAR driver, Greg Biffle with six others lost their lives in a devastating tragedy. Their plane crashed in Statesville, North Carolina, on December 18, 2025. The Cessna C550 business jet, registered to a company owned by Greg, went down near the runway at the Statesville Regional Airport shortly after takeoff. A joint family statement was released by the loved ones of those who lost their lives in the tragic incident via Fox Sports. It described how the incident has left the families of those affected, "heartbreaking beyond words". As the tributes continue to pour in after the tragic demise of the seven individuals affected, here's what we know about the cause of the crash.
According to the Associated Press, the aircraft took off from Statesville shortly after 10 am and was headed to Sarasota, Florida. But within minutes, it turned back towards the airport. The flight tracking logs via FlightAware showed that the plane had attempted to land before it crashed around 10:20 am E.T. and turned into flames the moment it touched the ground. The witnesses told WSOC-TV that the aircraft appeared to be flying at an unusually low elevation before the explosion. At the same time, the weather played a key role in the incident. Moreover, AccuWeather confirmed there was low visibility, drizzle, and cloudy conditions at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, the investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating to determine the exact cause of the incident. Authorities have revealed that it is too early to determine a definitive cause. In fact, the full analysis behind the tragedy could take months. However, the NTSB confirmed the jet had previously took off in good condition before returning to the airport. Still, the officials will examine possible mechanical issues, pilot response, weather interference, and runway conditions etc. According to People, Greg's wife, Cristina had texted her mother before the incident and penned:
"We're in trouble."

The aircraft involved in the incident was a Cessna C550 Citation. It is a popular corporate jet equipped with twin engines and seating six to eight passengers. Jeff Guzzetti, a popular aviation safety expert, told news outlets that the aircraft model is widely respected and used commonly for private use. Like all aircraft, its performance depends on weather conditions and technical health. The crash has claimed seven lives, including those of Greg Biffle, Cristina, Emma, Ryder, Greg's associate Craig Wadsworth, and father-son duo Dennis and Jack Dutton.

Greg Biffle was one of the most popular NASCAR competitors. He began his racing career in 1995 and went on to win the Truck Series Championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series Championship in 2002. He earned 19 Cup Series wins during his career. Greg was also named one of NASCAR's 75 Greatest Drivers in 2023. He was widely recognised for his on-field achievements and philanthropy work. Greg tied the knot with Cristina Grossu Biffle in December 2022.
