What Did Huda Mustafa Do? New 'Love Island' Controversy With Olandria Carthen Explained

Love Island USA season 7 became one of the world's favourite reality shows in July 2025, featuring interesting participants and their differing and messy definitions of love and commitment. However, even after the season came to an end, the show is still stirring drama. Recently, Love Island contestant, Huda Mustafa, who gained widespread fame, has been facing backlash for a situation involving former co-contestant, Olandria Carthen. Here's the whole ordeal explained.

Huda Mustafa's racism controversy, Love Island contestant and boyfriend laughed at a slur used at Olandria Carthen

The drama started during an Instagram Live of Huda Mustafa and her boyfriend, Louis Russell, on his account. The couple took a call from an unknown viewer. Before cutting off, the seemingly young caller referred to Huda's Love Island co-star, Olandria Carthen with a racial slur. Huda and Louis laughed at the slur and did not immediately take offence. Louis then exclaimed 'Whoa', while Huda asked, "Yo, what the f***, what did they say? They said a bad word.” However, the initial laugh of the couple at the derogatory term has not been sitting well with people.

After the incident, Huda posted on Instagram Stories, stating that she does not condone bigotry. Louis, who is biracial, also shared similar sentiments. In the Story, Huda shared that they both hung up the call after hearing the slur, but she also mentioned they did not hear who it was directed at. Although she provided an explanation, Huda was still lambasted for not directly apologizing to Olandria.

Olandria Carthen reacted to the incident that happened in Huda Mustafa and Louis Russell's livestream

Olandria took to her Instagram and shared a story calling out 'surface-level apologies'. She also explained the gravity of the kind of language used against her. Olandria also stated that laughing about it or making excuses makes it worse. At the end of the note, she also encouraged people tp donate to organisations that were working towards mobilising Black communities. A part of Olandria's statement read:

“That kind of language is never acceptable. Not in anger, not as a joke, not ever. Words like that carry generations of pain, and pretending otherwise only keeps the cycle going. Defending it, laughing about it, or making excuses is even worse."

Huda Mustafa shared a more serious apology, later dropped from the partnership with Huda Beauty

As described Olandria, Huda's initial 'surface level apology' brought more backlash to her doorstep. Following this, Huda posted a more serious statement, directly apologising to Olandria and also taking accountability for her 'inappropriate reaction'. She also encouraged people to donate to the NAACP, as she did. However, as a result of the controversy, Huda Mustafa's collaboration deal with Huda Kattan's beauty brand, Huda Beauty, was dropped. A part of the Love Island star's apology read:

“I want to begin by saying I completely respect Olandria and it’s extremely disheartening that anyone, especially a presumed child, would find it excusable to use this type of language, and doing so only underlines the ignorance of the gravity that such a word carries."
