The Tamil film industry is mourning the sudden demise of popular actor-comedian Robo Shankar. The actor was fondly known for his comic timing and signature 'robo-style' dance moves. He was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai after he reportedly fainted on a film set. However, as destiny would have it, the actor passed away on September 18, 2025, at the age of 46.
The doctors from GEM hospital, where Robo was undergoing treatment, released a bulletin and revealed the illness the actor was suffering before his death. As per the report, Robo suffered a complex abdominal condition and a massive gastrointestinal bleed. However, his condition worsened and he passed away suddenly. The report can be read as:
“Robo Shankar was admitted in a critical condition with a massive gastrointestinal bleed and multiorgan dysfunction secondary to a complex abdominal condition.”
According to multiple sources, Robo Shankar was recently diagnosed with jaundice, for which he underwent prolonged treatment. After his treatment, it was noticed that the comedian had lost significant weight, which was alarming for his friends and family. Despite his slow recovery, Robo Shankar made a quick return to television to complete his commitments.
Robo Shankar was a stand-up comedian and actor, who appeared in Tamil films. He earned the name ‘Robo’ for his robot dances in village shows. He began his career as a mimicry artist and made his film debut with Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara in 2013. He later earned fame through his roles in Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014) and Maari. He went on to star in films like Singam 3, Velaikkaran, Kalakalappu 2, Maari 2, Iravin Nizhal, and Singapore Saloon. His last film role was in the recently released Sotta Sotta Nanaiyuthu.
Robo Shankar is survived by his wife, Priyanka Shankar, and his daughter, actress Indraja Shankar. Apart from being Robo Shankar’s wife, Priya Shankar has her own identity as she is an actress and a plus-size model. Priyanka made her acting debut in 2020 with Kanni Maadam and went on to participate in popular reality shows like Cook With Comali Season 1 and Kalakka Povathu Yaaru Season 8.

Robo Shankar and Priya Shankar were married for 22 years. Ever since Robo Shankar was diagnosed with jaundice, Priyanka has been by his side. She would take care of him day and night, and his sudden demise has shattered not just her but his entire army of fans.
