Be it Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast or Tip Tip Barsa Paani; if there's one couple from the 90s, who had set the stage and the silver screens on fire with their sizzling chemistry, then it has to be Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon. Not only their on-screen chemistry made them everyone's favourite, Akshay and Raveena's off-screen love affair too, had made the headlines for years. It was in 1994, on the sets of Mohra, when Akshay and Raveena had met, and their love life had taken a turn. The reigning Khiladi of B-town, Akshay Kumar has smitten the B-town divas with his charm, and he had enough link-up rumours back then to justify his Casanova tag. And it was his affair with Raveena Tandon that had reached the stage of engagement, but things didn't work out between the two because of Akshay's disloyalty. In a 1999 interview with the Stardust, Raveena had cleared the air on her engagement and why Akshay had, back then, kept himself tight-lipped about the same. According to her, Akshay was a rising star and had a huge female fan following. He was scared that he might lose out on his female fans and his Bollywood career might come to a standstill if the news of his engagement was leaked.
Later, in a 1998 interview with Rediff, when Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon weren't together anymore, the former had confessed his engagement with the latter and had clarified that they had never gotten married. Reacting on his secret marriage reports with Raveena, Akshay had said, "It was only an engagement which broke up later. But excuse me, we were not married at all." Revealing that they were in a cordial relationship even after the breakup, Akshay had continued, "In fact, I've been shooting for a long time with Raveena even after we broke up."
Post their breakup, Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon had shot for the films, Barood and Keemat. And Barood's director, Pramod Chakravorty had said that he had a hard time filming with Akshay and Raveena due to their animosity after the breakup. Reacting on the same, Akshay had said, "That's again wrong. Raveena is a very professional actress. She won't do that. We have already finished shooting for Pramod Chakravorty's Barood. Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon’s love affair isn’t something that's hidden from the Bollywood fanatics. Back in the 90s, Akshay and Raveena were often spotted hanging out with each other, and they had decided to make their on-screen love a real one. Soon the news of their intimate secret engagement broke on the internet, but later, things took an ugly turn in their paradise and they had called off their relationship. Given the ‘Casanova’ image of Akshay, a time came in their relationship when he had cheated on her with Shilpa Shetty and he had later cheated on her too, with his now-wife, Twinkle Khanna. Akshay, Raveena and Shilpa’s love triangle had created quite a hullabaloo in the 90s.
At a chat show, Raveena Tandon had also spoken about her engagement with Akshay Kumar. Clarifying that she hadn't secretly gotten married to Akshay and they just had an elaborate engagement ceremony, Raveena had recalled, “It was a voluntary decision. I was engaged to somebody I knew. This is what I wanted, to lead a very normal life. I quit in advance before marriage because we did think that when there will be the last day of my shoot, we will go ahead and get married. Once I re-started my career, he again said that leave it and we will go ahead with the wedding. But, then I told him that once I chose you over my career, but now I will choose my career over you. No, there was a very elaborate engagement ceremony. With the pandit doing pooja and everything. His family had flown down from Delhi, my family came from Delhi. One of his elders had put a red dupatta on my head, and I think that was mistaken to be a wedding." Now, while Akshay Kumar is happily married to Twinkle Khanna and has two kids, Aarav and Nitara, Raveena Tandon is living her happily ever after with her husband, Anil Thadani and her children, Pooja and Chhaya (whom she had adopted in 1995) and Ranbirvardhan and Rasha.
