When Alice Kessler One Of The Kessler Twins Expressed Her Wish To Get Mixed With Mom's Ashes

Alice Kessler and Ellen Kessler, popularly known as the Kessler Twins, died by medically assisted euthanasia at the age of 89. Their demise was confirmed by the German Society for Humane Dying (DGHS) on November 18, 2025. The German sister duo rose to fame in the 1950s, but after 1986, they chose a quiet life away from the media glare.

The twin sisters contacted DGHS and expressed their wish to die together on a specific date. The duo was inseparable. Earlier in a 2024 interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the sisters expressed that they want to leave this world together, as the thought of dying separately left the sisters emotional. But do you know that Alice once expressed that she and Ellen want to get their ashes mixed with their mom’s mortal remains? Yes, you read it right. Alice and Ellen were born in August 1936 as identical twins in Nerchau, Gau Saxony, Germany. They were born to Paul Kessler and Elsa Kessler. At the age of 6, the twin sisters began taking ballet and cabaret classes. Since childhood, the duo was inseparable. They were totally emotionally dependent on each other.

In 2019 and again in a 2024 interview with German publication Bild, Alice expressed that they wanted their ashes to be mixed with their mom, Elsa Kessler’s mortal remains. For the unversed, Elsa died in 1977 and was buried at Waldfriedhof cemetery near Munich, while Paul died in 1979. In fact, the Kessler Twins also made a will in accordance with their special wish to be buried in the same place where their mom was laid to rest. Alice was quoted as saying:

"Ellen and I want our ashes to one day be mixed with our mother's ashes – and for all three of us to be buried in the same urn in our mother's grave. The shared urn also saves space. These days, we should save space everywhere, even in the cemetery. That’s what we stipulated in our will."

Radio Monte Carlo's tribute to the Kessler sisters

On November 17, 2025, following the death of the Kessler sisters, Radio Monte Carlo paid tribute to the sister duo on its official Instagram handle. In the note, they mentioned that the twin sisters were 'inseparable' all their lives. They highlighted the twin sisters' contribution to music, dance and television. They called the sister duo a 'unique artistic couple'. The note can be read as:

"Alice and Ellen Kessler left together, just as they lived: inseparable. Born in 1936, they were an absolute symbol of European spectacle, including music, dance and television. In Italy, they became celebrities as the 'legs of the nation', icons of elegance and stage presence since the Fifties. A unique artistic couple, capable of leaving an indelible imprint on the collective imagination."

More about the Kessler sisters

During World War II, when Alice and Ellen were teenagers, they had to leave East Germany. But using a visitor visa, the Kessler family first reached Düsseldorf, West Germany, and then settled in Paris, France. In 1959, after performing at the Lido with Bluebell Girls, the Kessler sisters allegedly met Elvis Presley, America’s King of Rock & Roll. In the early 1960s, the sister duo shifted to Italy and began their professional journey as singers, dancers and actresses. The twin sisters were best known for their Da-da-un-pa dance. This dance number earned them the famous nickname, 'legs of the nation'.
