When Karisma Kapoor Broke The MYTH About Kapoor Girls Not Working In Films, 'It Is Not...'

In the world of Bollywood, some stars are born into fame, while others build their name on their own terms, even when they belong to famous families. One such actress who took the film industry by storm in the 90s was Karisma Kapoor. She became a household name and appeared in some of the biggest blockbusters of her time, winning hearts with her talent, style and strong screen presence.

Her entry into the film industry was not as smooth as it looked. While her journey made headlines, her entry into the industry came with many rumoured stories. People believed that Kapoor girls were not allowed to act, and her joining films was seen as something unexpected. Over the years, Karisma Kapoor spoke about these rumours and told the truth.

Were Kapoor girls really not allowed to act?

For a long time, there was a myth going on in the industry that the Kapoor family didn’t allow their daughters and wives to join the film industry. Karisma Kapoor was the first daughter from the famous Kapoor Khandaan to become a leading actress, this added more fuel to the rumour. Many believed that she went against her family by breaking a rule.

However, in an old interview with WildFilmsIndia, she addressed this and called this a myth and a propaganda. She explained that these things were simply stories made up around the time she entered films, and nothing was true in it. Her statement made it clear that her journey into cinema was not about going against the family, but it was about choice, talent and passion. In her words:

"People just think this… this whole thing was propaganda that was made when I joined. They said her family didn’t want it, that she’s the first Kapoor girl, and Kapoor girls weren’t allowed to act. Which is not true at all."

"Everybody asks me, why didn’t your father’s sisters become actresses? I think, out of choice. They were not interested. They say, oh, your mother got married and didn’t work after that. I think it was because she wanted to have a family and be at home. That’s the only reason."
