In an old interview with Komal Nahta for ETC Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan shared how Rakesh became emotional after his film, Koyla, failed to perform well at the box office. Even after Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit were in lead roles, the Rs. 12 crore budget film could only gross Rs. 28 crore worldwide. The Krrish actor revealed that the director had to face financial crunches as he invested a large amount in the film. The Koi… Mil Gaya actor also shared that his father cried three times, and the Koyla failure was the first reason that made him heartbroken. Hrithik expressed that when his father realised that he had lost all his hard-earned money, he became teary-eyed. In his words:

"Ek aur time tha jab Koyla ke baad, there was some problem in the house. He had lost all his money, whatever he had earned. Kuch kuch he had invested woh bhi gayab ho gaye aur kisi ko paise diye the woh bhaag gaya."

Rakesh Roshan reportedly blamed Madhuri Dixit for the failure of their film, Koyla. He allegedly said Madhuri was not 'pretty enough' to win the hearts of the audience. However, this comment reportedly didn’t sit well with the netizens and actress, Madhuri Dixit. In the same year, Madhuri won the Filmfare Best Actress award for the film, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Karisma Kapoor. At the award show, Madhuri shared that she wants to dedicate the award to her so-called critics, who thought she should pack her bags and leave. This comment seemed like a subtle dig at Rakesh Roshan, who thought that it was Madhuri, for whom their film, Koyla, didn’t perform well at the box office.
