Most of you'll agree that we grow up sharing an invisible wall with our fathers. Though there’s no dearth of love in this relationship, however, with time, the wall of hesitation breaks and that moment becomes the most cherishable one. It doesn’t matter how terrified we have been of our fathers or how distant our relationship was with them, there’s always a middle ground where our paths meet and that is where the love begins. Punjabi munda, Rishi Kapoor had married his Sikhni ladylove, Neetu Kapoor in 1980, and are proud parents to Riddhima Kapoor Sahni and Ranbir Kapoor. In a throwback interview with Rajeev Masand, Ranbir had revealed that as a kid, he was petrified of his father. When Rishi ji would ask him to eat his vegetables, Ranbir would start crying. He had reminisced the time when his foodie father, Rishi ji would take him to fancy restaurants in the US and make him try different cuisines. When asked whose reaction he had dreaded for his debut release, Ranbir had revealed that it was his father’s because Rishi ji is very honest even if he’s talking about his family and will call spade a spade.
According to The Times of India, in one of his previous interviews, Ranbir Kapoor had recalled how once his father, Rishi Kapoor had lost his cool and slapped him. When Ranbir was 12 years old, there was a puja at his residence and unknowingly he had worn slippers to the place of worship. Rishi ji, who is quite short-tempered, had lost his cool and slapped him.
In a 2015 Mumbai Mirror interview, Rishi Kapoor had spoken about how he had ‘screwed up’ his relationship with Ranbir Kapoor and the ‘glass wall’ between them. Rishi ji had stated, “My father gave me space when I moved out after marriage and I give Ranbir his space too when he decided to move out and share a home with his girlfriend. In this house, he had one room: how could that be enough for a 33-year-old boy? He’s a great son, he listens to me but I don’t interfere in his career because my career is mine and his is his. I know I’ve screwed up my relationship with Ranbir even though my wife kept telling me about what I was doing. It’s now too late to change it; both of us will not be able to adjust to the change. It’s like there’s this glass wall, we can see each other, we can talk, but that’s it. He doesn’t live with us anymore, which is also a very big setback to Neetu and me. We’re building a new home where there will be a lot of place for him and his family. Rishi Kapoor had revealed that he is proud of his son, Ranbir Kapoor for fostering a respectable image among his peers and gives the credit to his wife, Neetu Kapoor. Rishi ji had remarked, “I’m told, and I’m very proud of it, that Ranbir is very well behaved, polite, down to earth, decent, cultured, well spoken, warm, and respects his elders. The credit for all this goes entirely to Neetu. I was diametrically opposite when I was his age, being arrogant and brattish, but what the hell? It was 1974, I was being paid a salary of Rs 5 lakh a month and half the world was crazy about me. But now I’ve mellowed.”
Throwing some light on his relationship with Ranbir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor had revealed his deep regret, “Out of respect I was always very scared of my father. I don’t know about Ranbir; of course he respects me, but I’ve never been friends with him and that is my biggest drawback. It’s also a deep regret but again, I don’t know. Only time will tell if it is something that’s good or not. I used to drink with my dad, though out of respect, I never smoked in front of him. Similarly I can share a drink with Ranbir, but he doesn’t smoke in front of me though I know he smokes. I never made friends with Ranbir and though I regret it, I am also not one of those guys who would want to be on back-slapping terms with my son.”
However, that was the past as now Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor share a warm relationship and during the toughest time of his father’s life, the 37-year-old actor had stood as a pillar of strength for him. In 2018, Rishi ji was diagnosed with cancer and had headed off to the US for treatment. When Ranbir was told about his father’s diagnosis, it had left him teary-eyed and was in a denial state for an hour or two. Later, after he had composed himself, he had taken Rishi ji to the US for treatment and would juggle between Mumbai and NYC for his work commitments and to take care of his father.
