The actor was loved for his versatility and nuanced performances in the early 2000s, but a tragic controversy derailed his career forever. Shiney Ahuja became a sensation with his role in 'Gangster'

Born in Delhi, Shiney hails from an Army background and did his schooling and college in Delhi. Post college, Shiney did a commercial for Pepsi and was instantly noticed by ad makers and was flooded with offers. With over 40 ads in a year, Shiney got his calling. He was then featured in a music video by Stereo Nation.

It was his Pepsi ad which got him Sudhir Mishra’s film, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, with which he made his acting debut in Bollywood. In 2006, when Shiney played the role of ‘Daya Shankar’ in Mahesh Bhatt’s Gangster, critics hailed his nuanced performance, and he became an overnight star. With films like Woh Lamhe, Life In A Metro, and Bhool Bhulaiya, there was no looking back for him.

Shiney Ahuja was accused of rape by his maid

Everything was going great in Shiney Ahuja’s life when a shocking allegation by his maid changed his life forever. In 2009, Shiney hit the headlines when his 19-year-old maid accused him of raping her, sending shockwaves in the industry. The scandal left Shiney’s life shattered, and his career took a nosedive.

Shiney Ahuja was sentenced to seven years in prison

After the allegation by Shiney’s maid, the actor was booked under Section 376 (rape) and Section 506 (threat to kill) of the Indian Penal Code. He was arrested and taken to Arthur Road Jail for trial in June 2009. After four months, the actor was granted bail.

However, during the trial, Shiney’s maid retracted her statement and told the court that she was never raped. The judge believed that she turned hostile and made the false statement under pressure. In 2011, Shiney was sentenced to a seven-year jail sentence despite his repeated claims of being innocent in the case. Shiney later filed an appeal in the High Court and was granted interim bail.

While Shiney made rounds from jail to courts, his once-promising career was left shattered. His industry mates, who were once his confidants, turned their backs, and he lost many projects, and no filmmakers wished to work with him. After getting bail, Shiney tried to come back to Bollywood with the film, Welcome Back in 2015.

Even during the promotion of the film, Shiney was absent, and the director, Anees Bazmee, stated that the actor was not in India. As per multiple reports, Shiney is currently residing in Manila, Philippines. The controversy was a devastating episode in Shiney’s life, and he could never overcome the trauma. It was the support of his wife, Anupam Pandey that Shiney could sustain the horrifying ordeal.
