Former Bihar Chief Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family’s private life have become a national spectacle after a public rupture in the family was witnessed recently. During the recent Bihar elections, when Lalu’s party, RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal), lost the polls by winning only 25 seats, an internal rupture in his family began.
After the party’s tragic loss, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi’s daughter, Rohini Acharya, publicly revealed being mistreated by her brother, Tejashwi Yadav’s close aides. She announced her withdrawal from politics and even left her home in Patna. It was reported that Rohni’s sister also followed her, and her brother, Tej Pratap Yadav, also came to her defence. Soon, the family’s feud became a topic of national interest.

For the unversed, Lalu Prasad Yadav married Rabri Devi in 1973 in an arranged marriage. Her uncle initially opposed the alliance because Lalu came from a humble background. However, Lalu impressed Rabri’s father with his intelligence. The couple married and had nine children, including seven daughters and two sons.

Lalu and Rabri went on to become Chief Ministers and took the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) to great heights. Just like them, their children too carved their own identity inside and outside politics, and soon they became one of the most powerful political families. As the family feud is leading the headlines, let us look at the former Chief Minister’s nine children.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s eldest daughter, Misa Bharti, was born when he was jailed during the Emergency in 1976. Her name was inspired by the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). She holds an MBBS degree from Patna Medical College and currently serves as the MP of Pataliputra. When Lalu was imprisoned in 1998, Misa assisted her mother, Rabri Devi, in governance. She is married to Shailesh Kumar, a computer engineer and has three children.

Just like Misa Bharti, Rohini Acharya also holds an MBBS degree and is a practising doctor. However, her political career was unsuccessful. In 2022, Rohini’s name gained significant attention when she donated a kidney to her father, Lalu Yadav. She is married to Samresh Singh, an investment banker, and is based in Singapore. Rohini, the mother of three children, contested the recent Lok Sabha election from Saran. After the defeat, she announced her exit from politics and their family home.

Lalu Prasad’s daughter, Chanda Yadav, is a law graduate and has stayed away from politics. She has only appeared on camera at family functions and mostly stays out of the media glare. Chanda is married to a pilot, and the couple has two kids.
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Ragini Yadav, was initially enrolled for an engineering course in Ranchi’s Birla Institute of Technology under ministerial quota, but didn’t complete her degree. She is married to Samajwadi Party leader, Rahul Yadav, and the couple has two sons. Though she has no direct link to politics, she is involved in the party’s business activities.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Hema Yadav, has kept her safe distance from politics and has been focused on her family life. A BTech graduate, Hema is married to Tej Yadav and has two sons. She has hardly been seen at any of the family's political rallies and prefers to stay out of the spotlight.

Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Anushka “Dhannu" Rao, has studied law and pursued interior design. Apart from Lalu Yadav, Anushka is connected to another political family as the daughter-in-law of former Haryana minister Ajay Singh Yadav. Anushka is married to Ajay Singh Yadav’s son, MLA, Chiranjeev Rao. The couple has three kids.
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s youngest daughter, Raj Lakshmi Yadav, has graduated in engineering and connected her father’s political roots to the Samajwadi Party. Raj Lakshmi is married to Samajwadi Party MLA and former MP Tej Pratap Singh Yadav. He is the grand-nephew of the late Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. Raj Lakshmi and Tej Pratap have two kids.
Unlike Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughters, his elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, studied only till class 12, entered politics in 2015, and became a Cabinet Minister. He also served as Bihar’s Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Tej Pratap’s personal and political life has been the subject of constant media attention.

Tej Pratap was married to Aishwarya Rai, the granddaughter of Bihar's former Chief Minister, Daroga Prasad Rai, in 2018. However, the duo separated soon after Aishwarya accused him of domestic violence. In 2025, Lalu expelled him from RJD and from their family home due to his ‘irresponsible behaviour.’ He then launched his own party, the Janshakti Janata Dal.
Just like his elder brother, Tejashwi Prakash studied only till class 12 and then pursued cricket before entering politics. He is one of the most active political leaders of Bihar and served as the Deputy CM of the state. During the 2025 election, Tejashwi Yadav served as the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face. He is married to Rachel Godinho (now Rajshri Yadav) and the couple has two children.
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s daughter, Rohini, donated one of her kidneys to her ailing father in 2022. She recently accused her brother, Tejashwi Yadav’s close aides, of ‘abusing’ her, adding that he even lifted a slipper to hit her. She was also insulted by them for donating her ‘dirty kidney’ to Lalu, in exchange for crores of rupees and a Lok Sabha ticket.
She announced her intention to leave the family home in Patna. Rohini’s accusations triggered a reaction amid the siblings as her three sisters, Ragini, Chanda and Raj Lakshmi, left the Patna residence. The family feud has raised many questions about the uncertain future of RJD.
