Venezuela's First Lady, Cilia Flores, has become the new subject of global attention after she and her husband, President Nicolás Maduro, were captured by the US forces. According to the US President, Donald Trump, US forces made a big decision following a large-scale military strike in the country. They flew the duo out of their country for allegedly committing various crimes, including narco-terrorism.

Who is Cilia Flores? 

Cilia Flores was born on October 15, 1956, in Tinaquillo, Cojedes state. She is a trained lawyer by professional who has gone from being a common person to one of the top figures in Venezuelan politics. According to the National Post, after Cilia completed her education in criminal law, she joined the Chavista movement as a legal defender for Hugo Chávez, who failed in overthrowing the existing government in 1992. Cilia was an integral part of the movement and secured his release in 1994, strengthening her influence in the movement. 

Later, the 69-year-old went on to hold some of the most powerful institutional positions in the country. Cilia was the first woman to serve as the President of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011 and later served as Venezuela's Attorney General from 2012 to 2013. As our intelligence analysts and political observers, President Maduro's term in Venezuela was a "dual presidency' where Cilia held significant decisive power. Her opinion was significant in the country's judicial appointments, party strategies, and internet power network. 

How did Cilia Flores tie the knot with Nicolas Maduro?

Cilia Flores and Nicolas Maduro go back to the early '90s when they worked as advisers in Hugo Chávez's political circle. Earlier, Cilia was married to Walter Gavidia Rodríguez, and they had three kids. Whereas Nicolas had one son before their marriage. They developed a strong bond, and after years of personal and political connection, they tied the knot in July 2013, when Nicolás Maduro replaced Hugo Chávez as President. 

However, she has moved beyond the traditional ceremonial role of the First Lady. She has become one of her husband's closest advisers and a key figure in shaping his political regime. President Maduro often called her the "First Combatant," highlighting her active role in the ruling party. Previously, her family came into the spotlight when her two nephews were found guilt in the US for drug trafficking charges affecting their ties with Venezuela. 

What might happen next with Cilia Flores?

According to the Hill, the US operation in Venezuela, the country's Attorney General, Pam Bondi, announced that she and President Maduro would be charged for serious crimes in the Southern District of New York' against the couple for narco-terrorism conspiracy. In contrast, the Venezuelan government has documented its protest against the US's alleged "military aggression.
