George Santos is once again in the headlines, but this time it is not due to any other legal trouble, but for Donald Trump's decision to release the ex-congressman. For those unaware, George has been serving 7 years in prison for fraud and identity theft. President Trump made the sudden announcement on Trump Social, where he claimed George had been 'horribly mistreated'. But apart from his controversial political career, George Santos' personal life has also drawn public attention, especially his marriage to a Brazilian man, Matheus "Matt" Gerard.
According to Page Six, George Santos and Matheus Gerard's story began in a rather unexpected way. They met after a glitch on the dating app, Grindr, that mistakenly showed them as being just a few feet apart, even though they lived in different states. But the digital mishap soon turned into a real connection, equally turning into a full-blown romance. The couple tied the knot in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed their wedding.
George and Matheus finally married in November 2021, a fact Santos publicly confirmed a year later in a social media post. He expressed his gratitude to Matheus Gerard for constantly supporting him during his turbulent political journey and addressed him as "'anchor and strength through chaos.' Meanwhile, Matheus Gerard is a Brazilian-born pharmacist who keeps a low public profile and maintains a private Instagram account. According to the BBC, he prefers to stay low-key, and the duo split their time between New York and Pennsylvania, living a quiet life with their dogs.
Before meeting Matheus Gerard, George Santos was previously married to a Brazilian woman from 2012 to 2019. According to The Washington Post, former roommates and coworkers claimed the marriage may have been for immigration purposes. They alleged that George was paid for the arrangement around USD 20,000, a claim he has denied. The ex-congressman used to say to his friends and colleagues that he "loved" his then-wife and shared a cordial relationship even after their separation. But US immigration records later showed that Santos filed a family-based petition for his ex-wife, which was approved in 2014.
On October 17, 2025, President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social handle and announced the commutation. He defended George by comparing his case to that of Senator Richard Blumenthal, accusing him of faking his military service. Meanwhile, George Santos was accused of stealing the identities of 11 people, including his own family. Yet, in April 2025, he sought an apology and an opportunity to rectify his past mistakes. Donald Trump penned:
