In early 2024, Mavis was diagnosed with advanced dementia, following which Jay filed for conservatorship over her estate, citing "major neurocognitive disorders", to ensure her long-term care and protection. In a recent conversation on Life Above the Noise with Maria Shriver, the 75-year-old comedian shared the shocking reaction of those around him when he decided to stand by his wife during her dementia battle. Sharing how some even suggested that he get a girlfriend, Jay recalled:

“A guy said to me, ‘So, are you gonna get a girlfriend now?’ ‘Well, no, I have a girlfriend. I’m married. Married 45 years.’ ‘Yeah, but you know what I mean.’ No … we're kind of in this together, you know. You can’t, ‘Honey, honey, I’ll be with my girlfriend, I’ll be back later.’ That was like the most Hollywood thing."

The comedian recalled the shock of even having to face such questions. However, he stood his ground in honouring his decades-long marriage. Reflecting on how times have changed, and how such expectations have become so common that fulfilling basic marital promises raises eyebrows, Jay shared:

"...you’re just doing the right thing because you’re supposed to. That used to be the norm, and then when you strayed that was the out of whack part. Now the out of whack part is fairly common, and staying and doing what you’re supposed to do is stunning to people."

Despite being the wife of a globally acclaimed comedian, Mavis Leno has long avoided Hollywood fame. However, she has earned significant praise as a leading voice for women's rights. In 2002, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work supporting Afghan women under Taliban rule as the chair of her Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan. In 1999, she and Jay made a USD 100K donation to support the Feminist Majority Foundation. 

Mavis has been an indispensable part of Jay's life since their love blossomed in the 1970s. The two first met at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles during the early days of Jay's stand-up career. The comedian, who was there for his own stand-up show, saw Mavis sitting in the front row, and a post-show chat eventually turned into a lifelong partnership. Mavis had once recalled the first time she saw Jay, telling the Los Angeles Times:

"It was in January... at the time I thought, 'Holy s---! That comedian is gorgeous!'  had gone to the Comedy Store with my girlfriend because I was writing comedy with some partners. Friends kept saying, 'You have to hang out at the Comedy Store and the Improv. You'll meet people who can give you jobs.' The first time I went, they sat us front row center — that means you're this far from the comic. And there was Jay."

After dating for some years, Mavis and Jay married on November 3, 1980, reportedly in a "very small wedding" ceremony which was held at one of their friends' houses. Since the beginning of their marriage, Mavis had been clear that she didn't want to have kids, and they never did. Over the years, the philanthropist has often graced the Tonight Show with Jay, and every time, their bond won over viewers' hearts.

When Jay filed for conservatorship of Mavis's estate in 2024, it sparked concerns among close friends and fans, considering the challenges that come with being a caregiver for someone with such advanced dementia. However, the veteran TV host has repeatedly said caring for Mavis is not a burden but a responsibility he willingly accepted decades ago.

When the couple vowed to be together, they were determined to make things work despite all challenges, and that love never left. Mavis, too, has stood by Jay during some of his darkest moments, including the 2022 garage accident that left him with severe burns. And now that the roles are reversed, Jay has adjusted his entire life around her care, even when the industry expects the opposite.
