Minneapolis is still processing the loss of a 37-year-old woman who lost her life after a deadly federal operation. Her death has sparked nationwide outrage and raised concerns over the actions of ICE agents. The matter began as routine immigration enforcement during the early hours of January 7, 2026. Still, soon it escalated to the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, igniting protests and questions over the transparency of the government. With the increasing public pressure on the government, the focus has now shifted to the officer, Jonathan Ross, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent whose name was not shared until hours after the incident.
Jonathan Ross is an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer with 10+ years of experience in federal immigration enforcement. According to the officials from the Department of Homeland Security, Jonathan had served for over 10 years in ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations. Additionally, he is a member of the elite Special Response Team. The federal authorities described him as an 'expert marksman' who served his country for his entire life, highlighting his extensive training and experience in high-risk operations.

But despite these descriptions, little is known about his professional background. Moreover, ICE has refused to officially confirm his identity when contacted by reporters. Instead, his name was identified by the Minnesota Star Tribune using court documents and law enforcement sources familiar with the case. For those unaware, under the Minnesota law, the names of the officers involved in shootings are made public. Still, the same does not apply to federal agents, which delayed his identification, fueling public anger.

Jonathan Ross has come into sharper focus after it was found that he was seriously injured during a separate enforcement action in June 2025. According to the court records, he was dragged nearly 300 feet by a fleeing suspect's vehicle during an arrest in Bloomington, Minnesota. He suffered deep lacerations to his arms and got more than 30 stitches. However, the suspect in that case was later convicted of assaulting a federal officer. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem and Vice President, JD Vance have used the earlier incident to defend their actions around the shooting, crediting it for their reaction. Meanwhile, JD said:
"That very ICE officer nearly had his life ended … six months ago. You think maybe he's a little bit sensitive about somebody ramming him?"

On the morning of January 7, 2026, Jonathan Ross was a part of a federal ICE operation in South Minneapolis, where he fired multiple shots into a vehicle driven by Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three. She was struck and later died from her injuries. After an uproar, federal officials have claimed that Jonathan acted in self-defense and alleged that Renee tried to use her SUV to hit the agents.

However, the local leaders have a different viewpoint. Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz questioned the federal statements. They highlighted how the bystander video shows that Renee's vehicle was turning away as shots were fired at it. Meanwhile, the FBI has taken over the investigation, and Jonathan has not been charged yet.
