“My stepmother is a Sikh. My father is from the sort of hippie counterculture, grew up in San Fran in Los Angeles. He hung out with a lot of the underground art movement in the Los Angeles of the 70s.”

She is a devotee of the late Yogi Bhajan. An Amritdhari Sikh is someone who has undergone the Amrit Sanchar ceremony. Taking Amrit is a profound spiritual step, which symbolises total dedication to Sikh principles and teachings. As an Amritdhari Sikh, Peggy follows a disciplined life that includes daily prayers, abstaining from intoxicants, and practicing seva.

Peggy was earlier married to Michael, who managed a dairy farm. The couple lived in Northern California and had a son, Adam. When Adam was four years old, Peggy and Michael separated, and she met George DiCaprio during one of her trips with her theatre group. She soon moved in with George, along with her son, Adam Ferrar, Leonardo’s step-brother. In many interviews, Leonardo has spoken about how Peggy’s spiritual path was a part of his growing years and that she brought a calm and peaceful environment to the family. He also pointed out that Peggy’s beliefs were lived quietly, without being forced or preached.

During the making of Quentin Tarantino’s film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Leonardo’s parents, George and Peggy, visited him on the set. But the scene turned funny when the Titanic actor introduced them to his co-star, Brad Pitt. He refused to believe that George and Peggy were Leonardo’s parents, and though they were extras in the movie. Speaking about the same, Leonardo stated:

“I remember when we were turning a corner out of Musso & Frank’s into Hollywood Boulevard,” DiCaprio said. “I told Brad, ‘That’s my dad and my stepmom there,’ and he goes, ‘Yeah, right!’ I said, ‘No, that’s really them!’ He said, ‘Yeah, right!’ I told him, ‘I know they look like extras in this movie, but that’s actually how they dress every day.’ It was an amazing moment.”
