The Rip's dedication is linked to the real-life inspiration behind the movie. For those unaware, the Netflix film is loosely based on a 2016 Miami-Dade police operation, which resulted in the largest cash seizure in the city's history. According to the Miami Herald, the total collection from the same was nearly USD 24 million hidden inside a drug trafficker's home. For those unaware, the officer who led that real operation was Christopher Casiano, a Miami police captain who later worked as technical advisor on the film.

The director of the film, Joe Carnahan, first met Christopher while working on Bad Boys for Life in 2020, when the latter served as a police consultant. During the collaboration, Christopher shared the true story of the massive drug bust, which inspired the idea for The Rip. According to the production notes shared with the media and Joe's interview with GoldDerby, the director made a powerful creative decision after he learnt about Christopher's personal tragedy of losing his 11-year-old son, Jake, who passed away in 2021 owing to leukemia.

In The Rip, Matt Damon's character, Lieutenant Dane Dumars, is inspired by Christopher, who mourns the loss of his son, Jake. Joe had emphasised hat Jake's name should appear in the end credits so that audiences understand the real cause of the guns and chaos. Sharing his vision, the filmmaker told GoldDerby:

"I didn't want this to feel exploitative or cheap. I wanted to create a vessel for this grief, something that could become a living monument to Jake for his short time on Earth. We had an absolutely bucking-sobs cry afterward. It was very cathartic."

Who was Jake William Casiano?

Jake William Casiano was the son of Miami police captain, Christopher Casiano. He passed away at the age of 11 after battling leukemia. Although Jake was not a public figure, his life left a major impact on his father, and now millions of viewers across the world have learnt his story through The Rip. Now, Jake's memory lives on through the film's emotional aspect. The dedication card at the end of the movie now reads:

The Rip was Released on Netflix on January 16, 2026. The film marks the reunion of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in their first major on-screen crime drama together in nearly 25 years. It is written and directed by Joe Carnahan and produced by the lead actor's joint company, Artists Equity. The Rip's features Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Sasha Calle, and Scott Adkins in lead roles.
