What was the 400-year-old curse on the Wadiyar dynasty?

There have been many folklore tales, but the one related to the Wadiyar dynasty dates back to 1612 when the Mysore state took over the Vijayanagara empire and the then queen of Vijayanagara, Alamelamma, tried to run away from the kingdom with the treasure that belonged to her but was stolen by the Mysore army during the invasion. While she tried to escape, the king of Wadiyar ordered his men to catch Alamelamma.

She ran towards the Cauvery river near Malingi and reportedly threw all the jewels in it. However, before jumping into the river, she cursed the royal family of Mysore and stated:

“May Talakadu be filled with sand and become a barren land/ May Malangi – that stretch of the river – turn into a whirlpool/ may the Wodeyars never have children.”

After the curse, there were no direct heirs to the Wadiyar dynasty. The successive kings adopted their nephews or cousins to take over the throne. The royals tried their best to please Alamelamma and even offered puja to her, but everything went in vain. However, the birth of Maharaja Yaduveer and Maharani Trishika’s elder son, Aadyaveer Narasimharaja Wadiyar, broke the dynasty’s 400-year-old curse. Aadyaveer is the direct heir born to a king after 60 years and will be the 28th descendant of the royal family.
