Usman and Rachel first crossed paths while they attended the same university in 2015. After they became friends, their relationship grew gradually. The duo dated for sometime and got engaged in 2016. Rachel was a Catholic before she converted to Islam to marry Usman.

The cricketer revealed that Rachel embraced Islam of her own free will, without any pressure. The couple had dual ceremonies, a nikah in 2017 and a wedding in 2018. Usman and Rachel are parents to two daughters, Aisha Rahil and Ayla Fozia. Rachel often posts pictures of her family on social media.

On December 14, 2025, Australia witnessed a mass shooting at Bondi Beach as people celebrated Hanukkah, the Jewish festival. Two gunmen named Sajeed Akram and his son Naveed opened fire on people present on the beach. Soon after the massacre, Usman Khawaja’s family was targeted with nasty comments since he was Muslim. Soon, his wife, Rachel, posted the screenshots of many brutal comments that targeted the couple’s daughters. She also penned how the hatred was not new to her family and wrote:

“I've collected a small sample of some of the comments we have received over the past week. I would love to say this is new, but sadly we have always received these kinds of messages. But of course, they have gotten worse."

Usman announced his retirement from international cricket after the fifth and final Ashes clash against England. He has left a legacy as Australia's first Muslim Test cricketer. During his speech, Usman revealed that he is a proud Muslim coloured boy from Pakistan, who was told that he would never play for the Australian cricket team.

Usman immigrated to Australia from Islamabad as a child, battling the odds to become the country's first Pakistan-born and first Muslim national player. Apart from cricket, he is also a qualified pilot. During his speech, he mentioned Rachel, his wife, and her immense support towards his career. Speaking about how she was the one who faced the brunt of his performances, Usman said:

“Rachel, my beloved wife, this journey has asked more of you than it has ever asked of me, particularly since you read everything that goes on in the press. The missed moments, the long stretches apart, the pressures that come with this life and taking care of the kids on your own, you carried our family so I could chase my dream, and I'll always be grateful for that.”
