Meet Mahesh Jirawala: The Gujarati Filmmaker Who Became A Ground VICTIM In The Air India Crash

The tragic plane crash of Air India that happened on June 12, 2025, shocked the entire world. Among hundreds of victims, one name is of Mahesh Jirawala, a well-known filmmaker from Gujarat. He had gone missing after the crash and his family had no idea about his whereabouts. For days, his family searched for him, with just one hope that he might be safe. But now, DNA reports have confirmed that Mahesh was among the ground victims who lost their lives in the crash.

Mahesh Jirawala was a filmmaker, who had made a name for himself in Gujarati cinema and music video production. He was known for making films with social messages and also led his own production company. His death has left his friends, family and fans heartbroken. His death is also a big loss for the Gujarati cinema. 

Who was Mahesh Jirawala?

Mahesh Kalawadia, also known as Mahesh Jirawala was born and brought up in Naroda, Ahmedabad and was known for his amazing contributions to Gujarati cinema. He was interested in storytelling from a young age and in Ahmedabad, he pursued his passion for storytelling and eventually set up Mahesh Jirawala Productions where he was the CEO. He gained popularity for directing music videos and was known for making films with social messages. In 2019, he directed the film, Cocktail Premi Pag Of Revenge, featuring Asha Panchal and Vruti Thakkar in lead roles. He is survived by his wife Hetal Jirawala, and the couple had two children - one daughter and one son. He had beautifully managed his growing career and family life. 

What happened on the day of the crash?

On June 12, 2025, an Air India flight crashed shortly after its takeoff from Ahmedabad International Airport. The crash killed almost everyone who was on-board and several people on the ground as well. It was one of the deadliest accidents in recent history.

Mahesh Jirawala, was not on the flight. That day, he had gone out for a meeting and had called his wife around 1:14 pm to inform her that the meeting had ended and is on his way back home. But when he didn't return and his phone was switched off, his family got worried and started searching for him. His last phone location was found to be 700 meters from the crash site.

For days, Mahesh was missing. His family had no idea but had hope that he would be fine. The family had submitted his DNA samples to help with identifying him. On June 20, 2025, a body was found from the crash site that matched Mahesh's DNA. His death was caused by the crash even though he was on the ground. His burnt scooter and mobile phone were also found. Initially, his family struggled to accept the news, but eventually recognized his remains after forensic confirmation. As reported by PTI, a few days his wife had shared: 

“My husband called me at 1:14 pm to tell me his meeting is over and that he is on his way home. However, when he did not return, I called up his phone, but it was switched off. His phone got switched off around 1:40 pm (a minute after the flight took off). His scooter and mobile phone are missing. All this is unusual since he would never use that route to come home.”

The Air India crash on June 12, 2025, is one of the most tragic incidents. Flight AI171, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, had taken off from Ahmedabad Airport and was headed to London. But in less than 40 seconds after takeoff, the flight lost control descending from a height of 625 feet. The pilot sent a May Day call. However, it was too late, and before the station could respond, it crashed into a medical college, killing almost everyone on board which included 230 passengers, 12 crew members and several locals, students and residents. Only one passenger, Ramesh Vishwaskumar survived this crash.
