Why Did 'And Just Like That' End Quietly? Costume Designer Claims She Was Not Informed, 'I Think..'

The sudden end of And Just Like That immediately following its third season's finale has left fans both shocked and upset. Unlike other shows, HBO did not announce that the third season would be the last one; rather, showrunner, Michael Patrick King and protagonist, Sarah Jessica Parker shared the news on August 1, 2025.

It was just two weeks before the audience got to see the final episode of season 3. Several fans felt that 'Carrie Bradshaw's story ended too abruptly. For a show that carried the legacy of Sex and the City, a quiet end has sparked multiple questions by viewers and within its team, leaving them perplexed.

And Just Like That's costume designer claims she was not formally informed about the show's end

Costume designer, Molly Rogers, who designed the trend-setting costumes for And Just Like That, Sex and the City and its movies, shared that she was never officially informed that the series was ending. Instead, she described the process as a 'total blackout'. However, she did sense some hints for the same after reading the script for the third season, especially the last episode. Sharing her feelings, she said:

"It wasn't like HBO sent an email saying, 'pack your bags. I think that's the only way these days to keep something a secret. Total blackout."

Molly revealed that she had imagined that 'Carrie' would be happy with herself at the end and the audience finally got to see her do the same. Plus, getting to know about the show's cancellation with the public softened the blow. The costume designer also mentioned that she carefully chose the final outfit for 'Carrie', where she danced in a pink sequined top and tulle skirt, because it included a tutu from Sex and the City's opening credits. Expressing her views on the show's conclusion, she said:

"I'm glad, I might have been weeping as I chose the last shoe, or something. I think it's better to be in the dark, and just think of it fondly, and that you gave it your best shot – even not knowing it was the last shot."

And Just Like That ended due to creative or viewership reasons?

Ever since the fans got to know about And Just Like That's end, there has been a curiosity about why it ended. Michael explained to Variety that it was a creative decision where 'Carrie' is happy by herself, while the industry reports point out to low viewership numbers, leading to confusion. The show's viewership had been gradually going down since it began in 2021, coming down to more than 60 percent for Season 3. Moreover, fans and critics called out the inconsistent tone, awkward dialogue, weird scenes like the bizarre overflowing toilet comparison and storyline. Alongside, the absence of Kim Cattrall's beloved 'Samantha Jones' created a void that was not fulfilled.

How did And Just Like That ended?

Despite all the chaos and confusion, And Just Like That got a proper ending where the lead 'Carrie' chose independence over romance while 'Miranda' found stability. 'Charlotte' was able to find a balance between her career goals and family.
