Russell Wilson is a popular figure known for his behaviour both on and off the field. As a football quarterback for the National Football League, he is well-known for his 'dual-threat' skills. Meanwhile, off the field, Russell has won hearts through his numerous charitable endeavours, gentlemanly behaviour, and unwavering support for his wife, Ciara. Recently, the couple made headlines after it was reported that Ciara's son with her ex-fiancé, Future, had taken the surname of Russell Wilson.
As Ciara made the decision to remove her son's biological father's surname legally, people have been curious about the former couple's messy breakup. After their split, neither of them has shied away from making remarks against the other. Hence, here's the reason why Ciara and Future broke up, as revealed by them.
Ciara decided to break up with Future after their son was born
Ciara, a very popular R&B singer, met the rapper Nayvadius Wilburn (stage name Future) while they collaborated on a song in 2012. A year later, in 2013, they got engaged, and then they welcomed their son, Future Zahir Wilburn. However, soon after the birth of her baby boy, Ciara called off the wedding and ended her relationship with Future when their son was just three months old. According to a US Weekly, a source close to the portal revealed that the rapper was cheating on Ciara with his stylist, and it wasn't a one-off thing.
In many interviews, Ciara has opened up about her painful breakup with Future. She has stated that it was actually the birth of her son that made her strong enough to take the step of being a single mother and leaving an unhappy relationship behind. While talking with Jada Pinkett Smith on the podcast, Red Table Talk, Ciara said that while her relationship with Future was crumbling, she would cry for hours in different places around the house. Talking about the difficult time, the singer said:
“I’d have moments when I would be in the shower, I’d be crying. I had a few different settings — crying in the bedroom, crying in the shower. Crying because I’m not in the happiest place, and it hurts what I’m going through."
In the same podcast, Ciara said that she thought about both her son and her father while making the decision to call off the wedding. She said that she knew the kind of love she wanted for her and her child and took the step to leave for both of them. Ciara also revealed that at one point in her relationship with Future, she thought about her father's love and believed that he would never do something like this to her mother. Ciara shared:
“When I was thinking about my son, I know what I want to feel. I know the kind of love that I want for us. What I did was – Future (Zahir) was like my teddy bear. So I was like, we gon’ go. We ‘bout to do this thing together. I had to take a couple of times to figure it out, but my dad’s love is what saved me in all my situations, because it would get to a point where I was like, my dad wouldn’t do this to my mom."

Future said that he was the one to call the wedding off with Ciara
Revealing another side of the story, Future said in an interview with HuffPost Live that he was the one to break up with Ciara since it wasn't working anymore. Along with these claims, the rapper also revealed details about their intimate moments publicly, which left Ciara fuming, and she reprimanded her ex through tweets. Talking about their break-up, Future said:
"Everybody already had their speculation on what happened. A lot of people said, 'Man, he cheated'…But our relationship had nothing to do with cheating. We grew apart. When you're a man, you want to make decisions for your family, and sometimes the lady doesn't see what you see… I called it off way before any cheating rumors came out. The engagement was already off."

Ciara and Russell Wilson tied the knot in 2016 and have welcomed three children together- Sienna, Win and Amora. Ciara's first son, Future Zahir also lives with the couple and is a part of their family, with Russell treating him as his own. In a recent Instagram post, Russell shared photos from their U.S. Open visit and in the caption referred to his stepson as 'Future Zahir Wilson' instead of using 'Wilburn'. Amid Ciara and Future's son taking his stepfather's last name, the rapper has yet to comment.
