Why Did Nikki Bella And John Cena Break Up? From A Publicised Proposal To Cancelling The Wedding

Nikki Bella and John Cena were once the most looked-up-to power couple of WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). From a highly publicised proposal to laying their relationship bare on the reality TV shows, Total Divas and Total Bellas, their romance has always remained in the spotlight. However, after nearly six years of dating and almost getting married the two WWE stars broke and went their separate ways. 

However, as the recent episode of Monday Night Raw saw a new rivalry between Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella, the former did not hold back from attacking the 'Bella Diva' by referencing her past with John Cena. With this taunt, people have become curious again about what transpired between the former WWE couple. Here's the reason why Nikki and John Cena broke up. 

John Cena reportedly had a lot of strict rules for Nikki Bella 

John Cena and Nikki Bella had never kept their relationship under wraps. As soon as they transitioned from wrestling colleagues to friends and eventually to lovers, they kept their fans informed. In 2012, they finally started dating, and the following year, they moved in together. However, what was supposed to be a romantic moment was marred by John Cena's strict personality, as shown in the Total Divas and Total Bellas. The WWE champion pulled out a 75-page-long contract with many rules and had his girlfriend sign it before moving in with him. However, Nikki was so smitten with John that she agreed to it all. Talking about their first date, she even shared with WWE:

"On my best first date, there was a very big, handsome man with an amazing smile and dimples. Even though we were both out of town, he came to my hotel and picked me up as if we were in the same city, and took me to a nice steakhouse. We just talked and chatted for hours. That first one went into the second one where we just had an amazing dance in the middle of the restaurant. No one’s ever done that with me, and yes, that was John. So he’s awesome."

John Cena and Nikki Bella had very opposite views on having children

According to many reports, one of the main differences between the couple was their opinions on whether to have children. John Cena was completely against being a father and had made it clear to Nikki from the start. The WWE diva had accepted while their romance was still budding. However, things changed when, in the wrestling ring while being surrounded by thousands of viewers, John Cena went down on one knee and proposed to Nikki after a roaring WrestleMania. 

Nikki Bella said yes to the proposal, and as a result, she was engaged to John Cena. With wedding bells ringing in the near future, the topic of parenthood came up again. John remained firm in his earlier stance and did not want to be a father. Nikki Bella, on the other hand, wanted a family. The two were also seen discussing this in the reality TV show, Total Bellas. 

Did Nikki Bella break up with John Cena? 

In 2018, Nikki Bella and John Cena not only called off their wedding but they also broke up and went their separate ways. Nikki joined the reality show, Dancing With the Stars and found love with her choreographer, Artem Chigvinstev. The two got engaged and also welcomed their baby boy, Matteo, fulfilling Nikki's dream of becoming a mother. However, years later, she finally opened up about her breakup with John Cena in a chat with Entertainment Tonight, revealing that she was the one to walk away. Talking about the split, Nikki shared:

"You almost wish it was bad, because it’s so much easier to walk away. It's so much harder to walk away when it's loving. I think a lot of women get into this situation when it's like, 'I love this person, but I don't know if it's right for my life,' and that's a hard thing. Sometimes we meet amazing people, but we're just meant to live a different life."

Nikki Bella had found love again with Artem Chigvinstev after moving on from John Cena. The couple also became parents to a baby boy and tied the knot in 2022. However, the marriage ended in a divorce, with Nikki accusing her ex-husband of domestic assault. The divorce was finalised in 2024, and as of now Nikki doesn't seem to be a relationship with anyone. John Cena also moved on from the failed engagement and started dating engineer, Shay Shariatzadeh in 2019. A year later, they tied the knot in 2020 and have been together since.
