Sonu Nigam is a name that hardly needs any introduction. Known as one of the most talented singers in Bollywood, Sonu began his career as a professional singer when he sang the song Hum To Chhaila Ban Gaye for DD National's show, Talash (1992). In a career spanning more than three decades, Sonu has given many hot numbers in Hindi cinema.
Be it the soothing title track of Kal Ho Naa Ho or the foot-tapping number Yeh Dil Deewana, from Pardes, Sonu has done justice to all his songs. But it was the title track, Sandese Aate Hain, from J.P. Dutta’s Border, which made Sonu one of the most versatile singers in Hindi cinema. Sonu was heaped with praises for adding his trademark emotional touch to the song.

Though Sonu was lauded for his vocals for Sandese Aate Hain, the singer refused to accept the Filmfare Award for the song. The reason behind the same will blow your mind. It so happened that when Sonu learned he had been named for the award, he straight away asked whether his co-singer, Roop Kumar Rathod, would get the same. As both singers sang the song, Sonu felt they both deserved the recognition.

In a throwback interview, Sonu once talked about the same and revealed why he rejected the award, and said:
“I was shooting at Madh Island and I got a call from one of my friends and he said, ‘tereko Sandese Aate Hain ke liye award mil raha hai’, you must go. I asked Roop Kumar Rathod ji ne mere saath gaya hai, unko nominate kiya aapne, he said nahi, to maine bola phir mai award loonga hi nahi. Ek gaane ko do logon ne gaaya hai, Sonu Nigam ko nominate kiya aapne, Roop ji ko kyu nahi kiya. Maine bola mai aa sakta hoon to bhi nahi aaunga.”

Border was released in 1997, and now the makers are back with the sequel, Border 2, directed by Anurag Singh. The ensemble cast features Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, alongside Mona Singh, Medha Rana, Sonam Bajwa, and Anya Singh.

The title track of the film, Ghar Kab Aaoge, was recreated by Mithoon and sung by Roopkumar Rathod, Sonu Nigam, Arijit Singh, Vishal Mishra, and Diljit Dosanjh. The song was recently launched at the frontier Tanot area in Jaisalmer. Sonu Nigam, who was present at the event, addressed the BSF jawans present there and revealed the lasting impact of the song on his career.

Sonu took a nostalgic trip down memory lane and revealed that he sang the original track almost three decades ago, and it reshaped his career. Speaking about the same, Sonu said:
“This song (Sandese Aate Hai), this film (Border), this team has been a very auspicious team for me. I still haven’t forgotten. We sang this song 30 years ago. I sang this song in 1995. The film was released in 1997. I used to get songs then but not such important songs. This song gave me the title of a serious singer for the first time. People believed in me because of this song.”
