Certain shows became a daily part of our lives while others made a special place in our hearts forever. One such show or rather podcast has been WTF with Marc Maron, which has now come to an end after 16 years and nearly 1,700 episodes. Hosted by comedian and podcaster, Marc Maron, the show officially began in 2009 from his garage in Highland Park, LA. Gradually, it gained fame and evolved into a cultural phenomenon over time. While Marc signed off with a final episode featuring a conversation with former US President, Barack Obama, fans have been curious to know what actually led to the end of the show. Find out what Marc had to say about it.
Since everyone has been confused about what led to the end of Marc Maron's podcast, the comedian explained his decision to end the podcast instantly. According to a statement in June, he and his longtime producer, Brendan McDonald, felt it was simply the "time" to end the show. Maron said there was no dramatic reason behind the decision to end the podcast. Instead, he was just tired and satisfied with what he and Brendan had accomplished over the years.
During an interview with Variety, he highlighted that he wanted to avoid the podcast becoming just another random kind of show, "feeding the garbage bin of content." For Marc, the decision was about preserving the integrity of his work. He mentioned that he was still proud of the legacy he had built. Another reason for the closure was Marc's wish to take a break from producing two episodes per week for a loyal audience. He admitted that the show has become a defining part of his life, connecting him to listeners who had followed him through breakups, deaths, and everyday struggles.
The final episode of WTF with Marc Maron featured an important conversation with Barack Obama, who had first appeared on the show in 2015 when he was still in office. His visit brought mainstream attention to podcasts and gave the show a unique status. In his last episode, Obama asked Marc how he felt about moving on from such a defining project. Marc admitted he felt a mix of readiness and fear about what was about to come next. The former president encouraged him to take a moment to appreciate his achievements, rather than rushing into the future. Marc even paid a tribute to his beloved cats, a long-running theme on the podcast, calling out 'cat angels everywhere' as a part of his goodbye.
Marc Maron was born on September 27, 1963, and he is an American stand-up comedian, writer, actor, musician, and podcaster. Before starting his podcast, Marc was a regular guest on shows such as The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
