The stories chronicling the adventures around the fictional 'Land of Oz' have captured the interests of children of all generations. The original story, written by L. Frank Baum, was then loosely adapted by Gregory Maguire into another book, which has been made into films and musicals. The recent film Wicked: For Good, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is also based on these stories. But what is the difference between the endings of all these stories stemming from one source? Here's everything to know about it.
Wicked: For Good, the sequel to Wicked, begins five years after the events of the first movie. 'Elphabha', played by Cynthia Erivo, has left 'Emerald City' against the orders of the 'Wizard of Oz' and 'Madame Morrible'. Meanwhile, 'Glinda', portrayed by Ariana Grande, has taken on the role of the spokesperson for the 'Wizard'. The love triangle between the two witches with 'Fiyero' is also part of the plot.

At the end of the movie, 'Elphaba' and 'Glinda' bid tearful farewells to each other. 'Elphaba' then fakes her death and leaves through a trap door. 'Fiyero' follows her, bringing an end to the love triangle. 'Glinda', on the other hand, reveals to the 'Wizard' that he is 'Elphaba's father. Then she imprisons 'Madame Morrible' as well. At the end, 'Glinda' finally opens the magical book called the Grimmerie. However, whether she knows 'Elphaba' is alive is a mystery.

Wicked: For Good film follows the second act of the Wicked musical. There are no major deviations between the endings of these stories. The difference is that while the movie gives ample time for 'Glinda' and 'Elphaba' to say their goodbyes, the musical's climax is rushed and chaotic. 'Glinda' sees the 'Wicked Witch of the West' melting and believes her to be dead. She then leaves to confront the 'Wizard' and 'Madam Morrible'. Meanwhile, 'Fiyero' rushes to the scene and saves 'Elphaba'. Hence, the difference between the Wicked: For Good movie ending and the musical's climax is that the former focuses more on the bond between the two witches. Meanwhile, the musical's ending centers on the romance between 'Elphaba' and 'Fiyero'.

The book is very different and darker than the movies and the musical. Written by Gregory Maguire in 1995, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch doesn't have a happy ending, unlike the other formats. In the book, 'Elphaba' is actually killed by 'Dorothy'. She is neither saved nor faking. 'Elphaba' and 'Fiyero' also have a son in the book, while he is married to another woman. And his wife isn't 'Glinda' either. 'Fiyero's entire family is also killed by the 'Wizard', while one of his children is taken as a slave. Apart from this, 'Glinda' also kills 'Madame Morrible' in the end, instead of imprisoning her.
