Many beautiful faces enter Bollywood with a dream of a promising career, but not everyone gets to taste success and ultimately leaves the industry. One such actress was Yukta Mookhey, who won the Miss World 1999 pageant. Born as Yukta Inderlal Mookhey in a Sindhi family, the actress was initially raised in Dubai.
Yukta is the fourth Indian woman to win the Miss World title. Just like other beauty pageant winners, Yukta too tried her hand in acting but couldn’t taste success. She soon left the industry and got married. But just like her professional life, Yukta’s personal life too was unsuccessful and left a permanent scar in her life. The actress also became a victim of domestic abuse. Let us read on to know more about her.
After winning the coveted title of Miss World, Yukta ventured into acting and made her Hindi film debut with the 2002 film, Pyaasa, starring Aftab Shivdasani. The film didn’t do well at the box office. After her debut film, Yukta was cast in many films, but they either got shelved or she was removed from the project.
In 2008, she starred in the film, Memsahab, but it also flopped at the box office. The actress also tried her luck in Bhojpuri and Odia films but was unable to find success. Yukta was one of the tallest actresses in the film industry, standing at 6 feet 1 inch. This significantly became one of the major reasons for her failed acting career. Soon, the actress vanished from the industry.
In 2008, Yukta Mookey got engaged to Prince Tuli, a New York-based businessman. In the same year, the duo got married in a traditional Sikh ceremony at Nagpur. The couple jumped into parenthood and welcomed a son.

However, Yukta’s marriage was short-lived as, in 2013, she garnered attention for her troubled marriage. Yukta accused her husband and in-laws of subjecting her to domestic violence, along with dowry harassment and physical abuse. Yukta’s FIR quoted:
“In her complaint, Mookhey alleged she had often been beaten up and troubled by her husband Prince Tuli. An FIR has been registered under Section 498A (cruelty and harassment) and Section 377 (unnatural sex) of Indian Penal Code after her complaint.”
In an interview with PTI, Yukta revealed details of her troubled marriage and the level of assault she bore. Yukta also stated that her husband, Prince, didn’t even spare the child and continued abusing her in front of him. In her words:
“If you don't get intimidated by his threats, then he will sexually and physically assault you. He physically traumatised and manhandled the child, which is never in favour of the welfare of a kid. He has abused me mentally, socially and emotionally and would yell at me in front of the kid throwing him around.”
In 2014, Yukta parted ways from Prince through a consensual divorce, and she also got custody of their son. She returned to India with her son after her divorce.
After a failed acting career and troubled marriage, Yukta is currently working as a social activist and raising her voice against child labour. As a single mother, Yukta also works for people affected with HIV/AIDS, breast cancer and thalassemia. Apart from this, she runs her own food joint in Delhi.
Yukta Mookey faced the most traumatic phase of her life when she faced abuse. However, she not just took a stand for herself, but also fought back with courage. She is an inspiration to millions of women.
