Zarine Khan Gave Up Modelling Career For Sanjay Khan, She Said 'He Was Irritated..Didn't Have A Job'

Zarine Khan passed away at the age of 81. The former actress was reportedly suffering from age-related ailments and even suffered a cardiac arrest, which claimed her life. Her demise sparked a sense of grief around, and her industry friends gathered at her house to pay their last respects to Zarine Khan. Zarine was married to Sanjay Khan, and the duo had been together for several years. Zarine was a former model who turned to interior design after her marriage. She was even touted to be the next Miss India, but she had to give up her modelling career, and it was because of Sanjay Khan.

Zarine Khan revealed the reason she gave up her modelling career while dating Sanjay Khan

In an interview with iDiva, Zarine Khan revealed that soon after they started dating, Sanjay's career in the acting world began to take off. Back then, Sanjay was too skinny, and as recommended by the doctors, he had to eat eight bananas and a pack of butter every day. Talking more about the same, Zarine Khan said that she also began modeling and was touted as the next Miss India. Recalling the same, Zarine shared that she would walk the ramp and Sanjay would watch her from the front row. She stated that her then-beau, Sanjay, didn't have a job back then and was irritated by Zarine's modelling. In her words:

"When I walked the ramp, Abbas would be sitting right behind growling. Those days he didn’t have a job, hence the irritation was all the more."

In the same interview, Zarine Khan mentioned that Persis Khambatta wanted to take her to London for a two-year contract. Well, Sanjay Khan was possessive and he conditioned his then-girlfriend that either she could go to London or stay with him. She chose to stay with Sanjay and didn't take the opportunity, and she was happy with her family. Mentioning that she started wearing churidars as her husband liked them, Zarine added:

"Persis Khambatta (supermodel/fashionista) even wanted to take me to London on a two-year contract. But my boyfriend was so possessive, he said ‘Either you go to London or stay with me’. I chose to be with him and I’m glad. Today, I have a family. Abbas liked churidars, so I started wearing them."

Zarine Khan and Sanjay Khan's relationship

Zarine Khan was only 14 when she met Sanjay Khan, her then-neighbour. The duo met at a bus stop, and Sanjay instantly caught her eye. It was days later, while Zarine and her friend were on the beach, that they encountered Sanjay Khan again. Sanjay, being shy, took a stick and wrote 'Hi' on the sand, which led Zarine's friend to reply. When Zarine and Sanjay were left alone, he asked her if they could go on a coffee date, and she agreed. The duo met during the sunset hours and shared their life stories.

The former model felt that they were two people from opposite ends of the spectrum, one being rock 'n' roll and the other composed, who could converse on any topic. On their second date, the actor proposed to Zarine Khan, and she replied that after one year, if she had feelings for him, they could move forward. Such a clever answer struck Sanjay, and he had made up his mind to be with her. The couple married in 1996 and welcomed 4 kids. Zarine had been a strong pillar of support for her husband, be it during his affair with Zeenat Aman or the time he endured 65 percent burns when the set of The Sword of Tipu Sultan caught on fire.
