Zarine Khan, the wife of veteran actor Sanjay Khan and mother of Zayed Khan and Hrithik Roshan's ex-wife, Sussanne Khan, has died. She passed away on November 7, 2025, at the age of 81, at her residence in Mumbai, due to age-related health issues and a cardiac arrest. Her funeral was held on the same day and was attended by several Bollywood personalities, including Hrithik Roshan, Jackie Shroff, and Bobby Deol. Zarine's son, Zayed, performed her last rites as per Hindu traditions, even though she was married to a Muslim. Notably, Zayed also followed Hindu customs during his own wedding. Read to know why.
Before her death, Zarine Khan had expressed desires for a Hindu funeral. The reason for her wish was that she was born a Hindu (her maiden surname was Katrak) and she maintained her faith throughout her life. Zarine's family, including her son, Zayed Khan, who performed her last rites, honoured her last wish, and she was cremated, according to Hindu customs. She did not convert to Islam after marrying Sanjay Khan, and her household remained interfaith. This was the primary reason her last rites were performed as per Hindu traditions rather than her husband's Muslim faith.

Zayed Khan chose Hindu customs not only for his mother's funeral but also for his own wedding, embracing the traditions in both of his significant life events. The Main Hoon Na actor had a Hindu marriage ceremony primarily because it was his Hindu wife, Malaika Parekh's, wish, and his family respects all religions and traditions. The couple wanted an intimate ceremony away from the significant, official function. Malaika and Zayed took the pheras in the presence of a pandit and their closest friends and family in Taj Village, Goa, a few days before their grand official wedding. It was a surprise event for the attendees.

Zayed and Malaika opted for a Hindu wedding because they wanted a personal, memorable marriage, which they felt would be lost in the massive official Nikah day, which had a guest list of 2,000 people. Zayed referred to the grand event as potentially feeling like a 'circus'. Notably, the couple kept the Hindu wedding a secret and only revealed it during an interview with the Couple of Things YouTube channel. Calling the ceremony a 'beautiful destination wedding', Zayed stated:
"Very sweetly, she had organised a pandit and pheras. And in Goa, at Taj Village, we actually got married before we got married. We did our seven pheras, and it was such a beautiful destination wedding. We really wanted to remember our wedding day and have fun."

Zayed and Malaika met as teenagers at the Kodaikanal International School. Zayed reportedly had a crush on her and it took him two months to even make eye contact with her. Their friendship gradually blossomed into love. The couple maintained their relationship even when Zayed went to study filmmaking and business management in the US and London. Malaika waited for Zayed to achieve something in life before they tied the knot. Zayed proposed to Malaika four times with four different rings, and she finally said yes. The couple then officially got married in a Nikah ceremony on July 3, 2005, and Malaika reportedly converted to Islam for the marriage. The couple is now proud parents to two sons, Zidaan (born in 2008) and Aariz (born in 2011).
