Zarine Khan, Sussanne Khan's mother, passed away, reportedly after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. She was 81 years old and was suffering from age-related ailments. Zarine Khan's funeral was as per Hindu customs, which sparked a conversation around. For the unversed, Zarine was a Parsi and married a Muslim man, Sanjay Khan. Sanjay and Zarine's daughter, Sussanne Khan was married to Hrithik Roshan. The duo married in 2000 and divorced after 14 years. Hrithik and Sussanne got married neither through a nikah ceremony nor according to Hindu customs. Why did Sussanne Khan and Hrithik Roshan choose neither nikah nor pehras?

In an interview with Rediff, Hrithik Roshan spoke about his and Sussanne's decision not to opt for either nikah or pehras. The actor said that he and Sussanne did their own thing and revealed that he was always inspired by church weddings, which he had mostly seen in movies. Hrithik said he and Sussanne wanted a Church wedding, which they felt would be short and sweet.

Hrithik went on to describe how beautiful the venue in Bangalore was, and how the then-to-be-married couple walked down the bridge that felt like an aisle, then exchanged vows, and then signed the register, which he felt was even better than a Christian wedding. He also shared that his wedding was even simpler and better. Hrithik could be quoted as saying:

"We did our own thing. We had neither a Hindu ceremony nor a nikaah. Actually, both of us had always wanted a church wedding. I've always been inspired by them, I've seen them in films! Church weddings look so lovely, so short and sweet. We had something very close to that in Bangalore. The pool in Golden Palms is the biggest in Asia and right in its centre is something like an island. There's a bridge extending from there to the edge of the pool. The bridge acted like an aisle for us. We walked down the entire stretch, went to the centre of the pool, stood there, took our vows and signed."

Even though Sussanne Khan and Hrithik Roshan got divorced, they never spoke ill of each other. The duo also shared a close bond with each other's family members. Hrithik would call Zarine 'mom' even after his separation from Sussanne, and Zarine, in an interview, said that her daughter never made a hue and cry about her getting divorced. Talking about Hrithik, she said that he is the father of her grandchildren and thus, they are bonded for life. She also praised Hrithik Roshan and said she felt he was in the wrong profession, but was a gentle human being with a kind heart, someone she thought could have made a spiritual leader.
