Sussanne Khan and Zayed Khan's mother, Zarine Khan passed away at the age of 81. For the unversed, Zarine Khan got married to Sanjay Khan back in 1966, and she was a Parsi. The couple met when Zarine was 14 years old, and while she initially pursued modeling, she gave it up because of her then-beau, Sanjay Khan. After her marriage, Zarine turned to interior design while taking care of her family; she also worked hard to build her own identity.

Well, her passing left a scar, and friends and acquaintances from the industry attended her funeral. Zarine Khan's funeral was performed by Zayed Khan, as per Hindu customs. The reason was that Zarine was a Hindu from a Parsi background, and when she got married to Sanjay Khan, she reportedly didn't convert to Islam. Zarine Kartak married Sanjay Khan in 1966, and their wedding was a grand affair. There's no confirmation whether Zarine Khan and Sanjay Khan got married according to either Hindu or Muslim customs. However, it was surely a traditional ceremony, as evidenced by the photos of their wedding. In several glimpses, Zarine and Sanjay were seen wearing traditional attire.

In one photo on his website, Sanjay was seen wearing a sehera, while Zarine was seen with mehendi in her hands. In another photo, which appeared to be from their wedding ceremony, and the duo looked the happiest with their family.

In a word, the photos couldn't alone describe whether Zarine and Sanjay tied the knot in nikah or took pheras; they never really talked much about their wedding ceremonies in any of their interviews. Well, with the fact that Zarine's funeral took place as per Hindu customs, it could be ensured that she never converted. Another thing to mention is that Zayed Khan, Zarine Khan's son, had a Hindu marriage, while Sussanne's marriage with Hrithik Roshan was not as per Hindu or Muslim traditions, and rather they took vows in front of their close ones.

A look into Zarine Khan and Sanjay Khan's relationship

Zarine Khan and Sanjay Khan were high-school sweethearts. Zarine was only 14 years old when Sanjay Khan, with his four brothers, moved into their locality. Zarine, who was a modern Parsi girl back then, was in awe of Sanjay, who never even dared to tease her, unlike others. Zarine was out for a walk on the beach when Sanjay wrote 'Hi' in the sand, and her friend also replied. Well, when Zarine and Sanjay were left alone, he asked her out on a coffee date. Well, it was only on their second date that Sanjay proposed to Zarine Khan, and she replied that if she still had feelings for him after a year, then they could move forward. Blown by the answer, Sanjay somewhat realised that she would be the love of his life. She said:

"He was standing on the beach in a white shirt and white trouser, Kolhapuri chappals and a book by Tolstoy in his hand. And here I was, sun-tanned, in an off shoulder blouse and a three-tiered skirt. As we walked, he told me his life story. I was mesmerised. We were total opposites. I was the rock ‘n’ roll and jive kind. And he was this calm guy who could converse on any topic."

Sanjay and Zarine stayed together through all the years, even when things turned hard with his affair with Zeenat Aman or his suffering 65 per cent burns on the sets of The Sword of Tipu Sultan.
