The sudden death of Zubeen Garg came as a shock to everyone. For the unversed, Zubeen passed away on September 19, 2025, after a tragic scuba diving accident. The untimely demise of the iconic singer has shattered both his family and fans. He was Zubeen Da to his fans, and they also fulfilled his last wish. The Ya Ali singer once shared his wish, during a concert, that when he dies, his fans should sing Mayabini Ratir Bukut at his funeral. However, multiple angles emerge when the cause of death is at the forefront. Zubeen’s death certificate stated 'drowning' as the cause of death.
On the morning of September 20, 2025, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to his X handle (formerly Twitter) and shared that the Singaporean authorities would be performing a post-mortem, and the process was expected to be completed by 2 pm SGT. After a few hours, he made another tweet confirming that the post-mortem of the iconic singer had been completed and his mortal remains had been handed over to the accompanying team, Shri Shekar Jothi Goswami, Shri Sandeepan Garg, and Shri Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s manager, in the presence of officers from the Indian Embassy.
According to a report by ANI, the Assam CM said that in Zubeen’s death certificate, which has been sent by the Singapore High Commission, the cause of death is drowning. The Assam government has approached the Commission for the post-mortem report. The Assam CM also stated that the post-mortem report is different from the death certificate. Speaking to the media, Himanta said:
"The Singapore High Commission sent the death certificate of Zubeen Garg, and they mentioned the cause of death is drowning. But this is not a post-mortem report. The post-mortem report and the death certificate are different. We will send the documents to CID. The Chief Secretary of the Assam Government is contacting the Singapore Ambassador to get the post-mortem report as soon as possible."
According to a report by The Times of India, Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, revealed that her husband, along with seven or eight people, including drummers, Shekhar and Sidhartha, went to a Singapore island on a yacht. She mentioned that all of them were wearing life jackets. However, the Ya Ali singer again went to swim when he suffered a seizure attack. She shared that it is not the first time that Zubeen suffered an attack. There were multiple occasions when he faced the attacks and survived each time. Garima also mentioned that Zubeen was kept in the ICU for two hours at the Singapore General Hospital. She was quoted as saying:
"They swam together and returned to the shore on the yacht. All of them were wearing life jackets. But Zubeen went to swim again and suffered a seizure attack. He suffered seizure attacks on several occasions earlier but escaped death. Other team members rescued him after seeing something unusual. He was kept in the ICU at Singapore General Hospital for about two hours."
In a recent press conference, the Assam CM stated that a video featuring Zubeen has surfaced online. In the video, the iconic singer was first seen jumping into the water while wearing a life jacket and returned to the yacht after 1 minute and 26 seconds. However, this is not the full story, as per the Assam CM. According to a PTI report, Himanta said that the Ya Ali singer went back to swim after returning to the yacht, and at that time, he was not wearing a life jacket, which resulted in his death.
