Kunal Kapur is amongst the most prominent chefs in India. The 44-year-old restaurateur is immensely popular for his appearance on the cooking reality show, MasterChef India. Kunal also runs a YouTube channel, where he shares recipes and cooking hacks. While the renowned chef’s professional life is known to the public, Kunal mostly kept his personal life under wraps. As per reports, he got married to a woman named Ekta Kapur in 2008, and the two became parents to a son in 2012.
On April 2, 2024, reports surfaced in the media stating that Kunal Kapur had been granted a divorce from his estranged wife. As per a report by the Indian Express, this comes after the Delhi High Court observed that the celebrity chef’s wife had made some ‘wild allegations’ against him with the sole intention to ‘disrepute’ him in the court. A division bench of justices, Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna mentioned in their statement that Kunal’s ex-wife had alleged that he had extramarital affairs and would regularly engage in flirtatious chatting with his fans. The statement can be read as:
“The respondent (wife) in her written submission has made allegations of infidelity and extra-marital relations of the appellant (Kunal Kapur) after him coming to the limelight. She has averred that once the appellant started getting public attention, he regularly engaged in flirtatious texts with his fans in addition to making unnatural sexual demands from her.”

The bench further mentioned that Kunal’s estranged wife failed to prove her allegations against him, and only presented evidence based on her presumption. Further, the court said that as these allegations were baseless and were made just to tarnish his image in front of the public eye, therefore, such an act is equal to cruelty. The statement can be read as:
“Such baseless arguments, when made about a person who is regularly in the public eye, have long-lasting effects on his reputation and tarnishes his image among his peers. Therefore, such an act amounts to cruelty.”
The Delhi High Court allowed Kunal Kapur’s appeal challenging a family court order that happened in 2018. The order denied the celebrity chef a divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act. The Delhi HC bench remarked that marital discords are part and parcel of a relationship. However, when such conflicts take the form of disrespect and inconsideration toward their spouse, the marriage loses its sanctity. The statement can be read as:
“In the light of the afore-noted facts of the present case, we find that conduct of the respondent (Kunal’s wife) towards appellant (Kunal Kapur) has been such that it is devoid of dignity and empathy towards him. When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage, and there exists no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together.”

Previously, Kunal Kapur had even accused his estranged wife of never respecting his parents and repeatedly humiliating him. On the other hand, his ex-wife claimed that these allegations were false and were made to mislead the court. She also mentioned that he did not respect the institution of marriage and even was dishonest as a parent. She further stated that she always communicated as a loving spouse and had been loyal to him. Moreover, Kunal’s estranged wife said that he, along with his parents, concocted stories to get a divorce from her.
